I had no idea that T. Kingfisher’s The Hollow Places was inspired by Blackwood’s The Willows. As I was reading The Willows I ended up having to stop to Google it because the setting was nearly identical to The Hollow Places - and my suspicions were confirmed. I enjoyed The Willows far more than The Hollow Places.
Even having read The Hollow Places and knowing what to expect, I still found it a creepy quiet satisfying read. It is unsettling, creepy, atmospheric, and foreboding. Blackwood did a nice job building up the tension.

I enjoyed this short story almost as much as The Monkey's Paw. The atmosphere creates such tension and anticipation, but it's done in such a way that when it's vague, it excites the imagination without inhibiting it like the novel I just read did, (The Great God Pan).
I feel quite certain George R. R. Martin has read this story and used it as inspiration for The God's Eye within his own Ice and Fire universe from the "other" imagery to the personification of nature as something elevated and separate to us. Wonderful story.
