Although I immensely enjoyed getting Casteel's perspective as well as the minor tidbits of new information we got from his 'present' POV (which managed to leave me hungry for the next book to come), I was surprised by just how literal and detailed a retelling it was.

Did we need this book? No, not really.

I wish there was an option to skip it and save your money, 'cause the new information we gain is very minimal.

It left me with a knacking feeling of how much of a cash grab this book was (as well as the execution of the "compendium" that came out afterward) while she finished writing the prequel series.

Sadly, in my eyes, it reads as being afraid of your series no longer being relevant when you come back to it and the pressure is on to just release something, anything meanwhile.
However, the retelling was done very well overall and was a smooth read.

It was also obvious how she tried to 'rewrite' some stuff and put in more hints in about Kieran and Poppy's curious attraction towards each other.
It was at least nice getting my memories refreshed on some of the stuff happening in book 1.

i love cas

Just a retelling of a story I already read!

đŸ”„A Soul of Ash and Blood by Jennifer L Armentrout đŸ”„

Book 5 of the From Blood and Ash series follows the first book but from the perspective of Cassian, who recounts his journey to Poppy. We get a deeper understanding of Cassian and why he struggles with separating his personal feelings from intruding on his mission: Saving his brother from the Queen of Masadonia and the Ascended that she created.
It was nice to get a refreshed viewpoint from the first book. It's been a few years now since I picked it up. Despite this, I didn't feel that I missed a lot, but I will admit I had to google characters I'd forgot. I have to say that I missed the early stages of Poppy and Cassian's relationship. It was nice to revise the enemies to lovers trope and forbidden love.

Overall, I'd rate it: ☆☆☆.5/5

As expected, one more layer of super-beings makes its appearance. And too many plot holes for it to be enjoyable.

Did we need a full re-telling of book 1 from Cas’ POV? Nope. BUT it’s a good recap as we get ready for book 6. If you don’t want to read the whole thing, at least make sure to read the “present” chapters to bridge the gap between the end of War of Two Queens and where the next book looks set to start.

Esto era completamente absolutamente necesario. Me sentí nostålgica a recordar la primera vez que entré a este mundo de sangre y cenizas.

Aun así me hubiese gustado MÁS.
