This book is a retelling from Casteel’s POV, and while in a normal circumstance I’m all for that, this wasn’t the right time for me personally nor the right placement in the series (JLA should have released this years after a completed series à la Twilight).

Tbh I only read the “present day” chapters since I’m currently doing a reread of the FBAA series alongside the prequel series. It just felt like a waste of time to rehash what I just read when I still have 3 books to go.

I loved this series! It was one of my early romantasy reads and it just sticks with me! I highly recommend it for all romantasy readers! This is a must read in the genre. You won't be sorry. Even though its a different series, you HAVE to read the Flesh and Fire series. The plot intermingles in the best way. You can't miss it!

My rating: 4.5/5 (round up for the sake of GoodReads!

I would recommend this book/series for:
- all romantasy readers! Must Read!
- readers that love tension and romance
- high spice romance readers

I think this book’s purpose was to be a “previously on…” between War of Two Queens and the next book, but there were just enough chapters that took present after WotQ that had pertinent information that I think you do need. But if the events of From Blood and Ash are fresh in your mind, you can skip the flashback chapters and read just the “present” chapters unless you’re dying for Casteel’s POV.

This is the Midnight Sun of the series. It did not need to exist within the main books and should’ve been a novella because there is maybe 10% of book that is actual new relevant information. Otherwise it’s just Poppy comatose while Cas retells her his side of the events of book one.

Although I immensely enjoyed getting Casteel's perspective as well as the minor tidbits of new information we got from his 'present' POV (which managed to leave me hungry for the next book to come), I was surprised by just how literal and detailed a retelling it was.

Did we need this book? No, not really.

I wish there was an option to skip it and save your money, 'cause the new information we gain is very minimal.

It left me with a knacking feeling of how much of a cash grab this book was (as well as the execution of the "compendium" that came out afterward) while she finished writing the prequel series.

Sadly, in my eyes, it reads as being afraid of your series no longer being relevant when you come back to it and the pressure is on to just release something, anything meanwhile.
However, the retelling was done very well overall and was a smooth read.

It was also obvious how she tried to 'rewrite' some stuff and put in more hints in about Kieran and Poppy's curious attraction towards each other.
It was at least nice getting my memories refreshed on some of the stuff happening in book 1.
