Read this AFTER the Maze Runner trilogy, which was a good choice. This is definitely action packed but not quite as good as the first book, The Maze Runner.
This book is a prequel to the maze runner series and probably one of the better books. While the first book was amazing, the two subsequent books following it were just subpar and left far too many plot holes and unanswered questions. Although not all of my questions have been answered, this prequel did help to set the stage of the amazing concept that is the maze runner series.
While Theresa and Thomas are mentioned in this prequel, they are not the main characters. There are a whole slew of new characters that we are introduced to and who we follow from the days when things were normal, through the sun flares and then the governmental experiment gone wrong (i.e. the flare virus). I liked the setting, buildup, and action. I also liked how as I read the book, more and more of the plot was revealed to me (which is what I was missing from the maze runner series). The author did a good job in this book of leading us through the story which made the book much more enjoyable (and less frustrating) to read. And just as someone else said - “I demand a sequel to the prequel!”

CONTAINS SPOILERS
I thought the characters were very flat, there wasn’t a lot of backstory given on each character which made me not care about what happens to them.
I thought the main plot was okay, the origin of The Flare was mildly interesting, honestly the only part I really enjoyed about this book was the flash backs we got of them experiencing the sun flares and how they got out of that.
I liked the ending with DeeDee becoming Theresa - again I wish there was more with that too.
Just not my favorite Maze Runner book.
