Ethan Frome stomps through the snow, lost in his imaginings of her arm tucked securely by his side, her warm smile and flushed cheeks turned up towards him, the glow of the dance still lingering in her steps as he escorts Mattie back home.
Stomping the snow off of theirs boots, Ethan opens the door to let Mattie through, only to find the sickly pallor of his wife waiting in the cold shadows of the kitchen.
Starved for the smallest hint of affection, destitute both in terms of money and love, Ethan Frome has lived a life of hardship. One tragedy builds upon another until one frosty night when longing pushes him to the limits of the human heart.
A mercifully short classic, with elements of forbidden love, a touch of mystery & a cast one cannot help but pity. This little book is set in the depths of a Massachusetts winter, making it the perfect book to cuddle up under a blanket with, preferably with a hot cuppa at hand.

You have to be quite a writer for me to give five stars to something that involves the trope of a an invalid who the narrator clearly does not believe is an invalid.

gosh, can Wharton write a sentence!!! I had to stop underlining the bits I adored because I was underlining the whole book. Bleak and sorrowful and yet tense and energetic. You can feel the ticking clock, knowing that the ending will pack a punch (and oh my gosh, it did not disappoint on that front)
The ending of this story is so melodramatic it whipped me into liking it. Like what. But I like what it symbolizes the desperation and despair that poverty brought to their lives and their inability to be able to decide their own future. But it’s so dramatic I can’t take this book seriously. I’m surprised this has survived as a “classic” I feel like it’s just an old book, with some good writing, some mid writing, some great writing. Whatever, I like Edith Wharton’s writing style I think I’ll enjoy her other books even more.
This seemed like a good "winter" book that I had never read, so I thought I would give it a go. Yikes! Clearly the effect of S.A.D. It is obvious from the beginning (so I'm not giving anything away) that a sled "accident" is coming--I won't be able to ride one again without thinking of this book. I thought the author's note on the narrative style was pretty pompous; and, it didn't work anyhow. You can't just slap an outsider into the preface and final few pages and pretend that it would be possible for him to "reveal" this story--there's too much emotional detail from characters that do not express emotion for that.
