i won't lie, i HATE reading a digital book so my reading experience was somewhat different than i would have liked it to be but this book is, was, and will continue to be incredibly powerful! i will always always always value an honest depiction of race and what it feels like to be a black girl in a pwi and the plight of starr and khalil is so emotional i just felt so connected to the book

Very interesting read

The only thing that icked me was the YA-ess of it, -sometimes it was a bit cringy- and the very subtle misogyny against Iesa (slut-shaming)

This was a very well written book. Beyond just the subject matter being important, it was really well written. The characters were all well devolved and interesting. I loved the family dynamic in it. I'd like to read more from the author at some point.

I recommend listening to the audio book, Bahini Turpin is a fantastic narrator. She's able to capture the feelings of Starr so well.

THUG LIFE = the hate u give little infants fu**s everyone

Book itself is phenomenal, wish I read it earlier. Even though it was written in 2017 everything still applies, just change out some of the slang and this could have happened last week. It grapples with such heavy topics (police brutality against an unarmed black teenager, gangs, domestic abuse, getting out of the hood, etc.) in a way that young adults can relate to and understand. The adults in Starr's life are exceptional role models they teach compassion, responsibility toward family & community, and how to stand up for what's right.

I highly recommend reading The Hate U Give, and will be reading her other books.
