YES: unrealistic ending, but loved the blending of women's issues past and present. Irritated with the mother though -- should've gone to the police, definitely child pornography charges in there somewhere. Important lessons for today's teens to learn included in this tite.

This wasn't an enjoyable read but I think it was an important story to read. It tells the story of 15 year old Anna, who has moved to St Andrews to escape some things from her past. She's barely settled in to her new school when nudes she'd sent to a boy back at her old school resurface and horrible bullying, in-person and online, ensues. There's also the big sub-plot of how a woman called Maggie from 400 years ago was burned at the stake for being a witch, and Anna has vivid dreams about her.
The comparison between Maggie and how girls and women are treated today was very on the nose, but not in a bad way. There's no point trying to conceal how misogyny was rife when witches were burned at the stake and is still rife in the present day.
The writing style was simple but effective. There were some really gut-wrenching moments and also some beautifully descriptive scenes. The characters were a bit one dimensional, but that didn't detract too much from the book.

I love that it starts after everything has happened so you see what the effects and the devastation is. It's a smart way to deal with this subject. There's no possibility of victim-blaming when you see exactly what it has done to her.

The main plot point in this book is something so relevant and not talked about enough in the way Laura Bates told this story about Anna. It's about women being objectified and judged for things that are out of their control. It's about men getting away with treating women like objects with no feelings just to make themselves feel better. This is a heavy topic and is unfortunately becoming more common across many age groups, not just high school as it was portrayed here. I loved the way this story was related back to the witch trials. How women would be accused and found guilty of witchcraft over things that had nothing to do with magic, but just made a few individuals uncomfortable. This was definitely a deeper read than I was expecting. But I think this is a story that needs to be told more.

What a brilliant book. The modern-day story is sadly all too believable, and intertwining it with a story from the past was a stroke of genius. All teenagers should read it!

Trigger Warnings: Rape, Bullying
I have a soft spot for Scotland and I will always enjoy a book set there! This one was interesting because we get to learn a little bit about the witch burnings that occurred in their history.
There are two different POVs in The Burning. In modern day we have Anna who is running from nasty rumors and a stained past in England. In the 17th century we have Maggie, who is put on trial as a witch when her rapist dies on a sea voyage. I found both POVs heartbreaking.
The only thing this book is lacking a bit is a little bit more of Maggie. I really enjoyed her parts, but they definitely felt second to Anna’s.
I definitely recommend this one!

When I fell victim to the themes involved in this book, I got stuck in a dark tunnel. I was merely 13 and I lost all hope for the future. So when I found this book, Anna's story helped me heal slightly. I began to feel less alone in my situation.
This book helped me find some inner peace that I doubt any therapist could've done. No reassuring could've done what reading another person's story could.
Having books like these can help people, like me, find some sort of aid.
