I'm not a big fan of writing book reviews because I feel as though my words fail to describe the emotions that I feel. But today I'll make an exception.

At first, when I saw the cover of this book I thought "Oh, just another erotica." But after I read the description on the jacket I became intrigued. So naturally, I bought a copy. Well, by the end of chapter one I was enraptured.

[b:The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer|8591107|The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #1)|Michelle Hodkin|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327885944s/8591107.jpg|13460686] is a beautifully written tale about a young lady who finds herself alive after experiencing a fatal accident with her friends. She moves to Florida with her family in the hopes of beginning a new life. But fate would not allow her to forget so easily. Mara begins to see images of her dead friends and suffers from frequent nightmares about the night of the accident.

She struggles to keep her sanity and catches the eye of the resident bad boy Noah Shaw *sigh*. Their relationship blossoms into something more when Noah unlocks the secrets of his own past to help Mara understand her inner turmoil.

Oh my. This book has sent me on a roller coaster ride of emotions. I experienced...

DEEP IN THOUGHT

Moments of intense intrigue that had me on the edge of my seat...

omg!

Moments of light-headed giddiness at Noah's frustrating sexiness...

Restless agitation when the story seemed to hit a dull spot...

shock

And utter shock when I read the cliffhanger at the end...

I've never been so enamored and annoyed at a novel before. But all the suspense, mystery and romance has left me wanting more. I can hardly contain my excitement for the sequel.

Every year I try to read one book my sister recommends, but this year she didn't have anything to recommend to me, so I asked her which of several books on her favorites list she thought I'd like, and she said none of them. Undeterred, I picked one that I'd seen frequently recommended and highly rated. As it turns out, my sister was quite correct in her anti-recommendation to me.

Young adult books can be wildly hit or miss for me, and this one had most of the attributes that make one a miss. The writing and editing were sloppy (for example, Mara sits down next to Noah, and then a few paragraphs later she sits down and Noah sits down next to her). Major events happen and then are never referenced again by anyone. Parents and teachers don't seem to care what happens (or are extremely easy to mislead) except when it's convenient for the plot. There is a character who makes a joke about being Mara's token black Jewish bi friend, but that's literally what he is — he's the entire book's diversity shoved into one character, unless you count that Mara's mother is Indian (and Mara and her siblings are biracial), which has almost no bearing on anything in the book except when Mara briefly considers wearing her mom's sari to a costume party. Jamie (the aforementioned friend) is either a vital part of Mara's life or completely absent from the narrative, depending on the day.

But the cherry on top is definitely Noah, the alphahole of all alphahole YA love interests. Even after he's inevitably revealed to be misunderstood and have dark secrets, it doesn't excuse how creepily persistent he is toward Mara ("I knew you were secretly attracted to me" is not an excuse) and what a general dick he is as a person. He's constantly ordering Mara around, taking away her agency by "knowing what's best for her." Apparently, the fact that Mara finds him irresistibly sexy is sufficient to cancel out absolutely everything he does and says, which also goes to my general annoyance with Mara as a character. I thought she was way too quick to be like, "Nothing makes sense, but I can't have anyone find out I'm crazy so I'm just going to aggressively ignore literally everything that happens."

The things that slightly redeemed the book for me were 1) Noah and Mara's argument near the end about what choice she should make, 2) the unexpected consequences of her making said choice, and 3) the large plot twist that I didn't see coming right at the very end. I would have greatly preferred this book if Noah had been taken out completely and it was a tightly plotted thriller about Mara trying to piece together what's real and what's not, but alas, I had to sit through multiple descriptions of the stubble over Noah's jawbone instead. I was not a fan.

I just loved everything about this book….At one point, I wondered if I was crazy and I truly felt her emotions especially the scenes with the earring and the one in the hallway….Those scenes were low key creepy

Update: I re read it. It’s mid.

This book kept me guessing the entire time. I was so confused throughout the entire thing. I had no clue what was going on. But man. I enjoyed every single second of it. From start to finish I was so intrigued.

Mara Dyer has woken up up from a coma after a horrible accident. After she wakes, she has trouble remember what happened to her.

This story kept me guessing the entire time. Is Mara crazy? Is she hallucinating??

And let's take a minute to swoon over Noah Shaw. With his British accent, gobs of money, and his eco friendly Prius. ❤️❤️❤️

Yes, there were the typical cliches that comes with YA. But for me, I looked passed all of that because the story was just so damn good. I am so excited to pick up the next book in this trilogy!!!
