I don't know what my feeling about this one are....I need a little more time to sit on it.
This is one of those books where even after I've finished reading it, I feel overwhelmingly confused. It sort of reminds me of Stephen King's plots, specifically Carrie; I'm not sure what to believe or what not to believe, and I just wanted a concrete answer towards the end but didn't really get one. All of this isn't bad, on the contrary I really did enjoy this book and how interesting it was, I'm just still sort of confused...
I know this book review doesn't really make sense, and that it isn't that great of help but I'm going to write a review on my blog and see if I can collect my thoughts. I will definitely be picking up the second book because I NEED to know what happens.

Well, this one's difficult. I like the mysterious circumstances and the premise for the story, but there was seriously something wrong with the characters. I don't get why Mara doesn't get (more) professional help from the beginning, and I got a bit tired of her during the book - especially when she's around Noah. And why does he have to be a half Luke Perry (90210) and half Edward (Twilight)? The pretty bad boy that acts dominant and is so rich that he can solve anything with money. How convenient. But it's especially the dominant part I dislike. Please stop that in YA.
Fortunately there are Mara's brothers to be the loving and caring characters in the story.
The last chapters made me curious and I'm planning to read the next book - although it got a bit too cliché emo. I just hope there will be mere focus on the mysterious part and not so much on the love drama.

This was different.
I enjoyed every word.
Mara annoyed me when it came to Noah and what she can do. I liked Noah for her, but she just doesn't listen all the time.
Spoiler-
What was with her going to the precinct? How would she get fire ants near the teacher and what about the epi pen? I don't get why she can't listen to Noah and accept his help. And than she sees Jude?
I wonder what the second book is going to reveal.

This book, omg, it amazed me, my mind.
It's been a while since i've felt this rush, this excitment towards a book. And when i say a while, i mean a couple of months.
But still.
Amazing. I was so catching Mara's madness and the Noah's love for her is just so fucking intense. Beautifully written, made my heart hurt but in a good way (i hope you can imagine your heart hurting but in good way).
Michelle did a wonderful job with this one and i cannot waait for the others.
I RECOMMEND IT, OF BLOODY FUCKING COURSE!
(I wished Noah would say bloody, oh well).
Two years later and I'm sill loving this book, the romance now feels a bit off, maybe it's because it was too fast? Idk maybe it's because I like my romances slow burn. There's something that idk.
Anyway, the plot is still fabulous, even knowing what's going on, I still felt that confusion and fucking madness that Mara was feeling which, in my opinion, is amazing and it's only because Michelle Hodkin's writing is that amazing.
Still recommend this book and still wished Noah said more bloody in the books.

I was fully prepared to either love or hate this book but I'm just confused. The writing was pretty good but the representation was fucking awful. The book was a whole bunch of cliches, stereotypes, and ptsd. (no spoilers)
"Half-indian" mc is basically a white girl, zero mention of any indian culture whatsoever and the few appearances we got were: her mom owning 2 saris somewhere in the back of the closet, her eating rice (which she hallucinated as maggots btw) and her brother playing "InDiAn" music, not bollywood, not hindi, not tamil, ✨InDiAn✨, which apparently, Mara hates. Like if you're going to portray an ethnic character at least put the bare minimum research into their culture-
Now, I don't have ptsd, so I can't speak for how accurate the portrayal of that is but I can ABSOLUTELY shit on the blatant internalised misogyny and performative diversity.
Mara has a jewish, black, bisexual bestie "WoOOOoowWW DiVeRsItYyYy" who makes quite a few comments on how much of a sl*t the "MeAn BiTcHy BuLlY" is and, get this..mean bitch also has a gay bestie who mara's bestie calls "Mean queen"......wtf.
There was some random occulty witchy weird shit in the middle where Mara drank...and unidentified creature's blood (likely a chicken) andddd that somehow made her remember shit?
Also the author's a zionist sooooo if you still want to read it, find a free online pdf.
In short, this book damaged my brain significantly and I have no idea wtf the plot was, yes I will be reading the next book, because of the cliffhanger.
