reading this the second time around i completely fell for marashaw again, their banter, interactions at schools, and their quotes are perfect. i loved when noah told her that she wasn’t broken and how he didn’t need to fix her.

i’m hoping as the story develops just how mara has opened up to noah, noah will be able to open up more to mara.

i love the concept of light vs dark between the two but i feel like the lines are way more blurred. this is definitely a quick read and so good with the concept of mara’s powers and the mystery as the story unfolds. hopefully might pick up for a third reread but who knows!

“And just like that, I was completely, utterly, and entirely,
His.”

So...not my favorite. I utterly love Noah. The rest is all meh to me. It’s like the author couldn’t figure out what this story was meant to be. Is it paranormal? Is it a love story? Is it a thriller? Is it a mystery? Like...some of those things can all be combined and meshed seamlessly...but this isn’t one of them. I spent most of my time wondering what was going on but then to throw these abilities in there. And then add kidnapping and mystery on top. I don’t know. Just not my favorite. Maybe it helps transition into the rest of the trilogy. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This book is PROBLEMATIC in so many ways. Too much romance, not enough paranormal. And Noah( the male character) is the bad boy you can't help but love, while he's quite obviously not treating Mara well. Why did I even read this book in 2020? God only knows! Will NOT be continuing in the trilogy for sure.

I felt torn after reading this book. A part of me enjoyed the story. The other part rolled my eyes... A lot. This is basically a paranormal romance. So if you like those genres then you would enjoy this. The story dragged in the beginning, but got better as the book progressed. The ending pissed me off because it felt like there should have been one more chapter. I know that this is part of a trilogy, but I feel like a novel should feel complete even if the character's story/journey isn't. I'm starting the second book (I'm no quitter), and I hope that it's better than the first.

So I had a love/hate relationship with this book.

Mara is hanging out with her friends when suddenly she wakes up in a hospital bed with no memory of the accident that killed her three best friends. To recover from her PTSD, she uproots her whole family to Florida. The memories start flowing back slowly and Mara notices something is not quite right in her world.

I loved the paranormal/mysterious aspects of Mara's situation - kept me from putting the book down when I should have been sleeping; I had a problem with the almost too corny teen puppy love between her and Noah, the schools rich pretty boy.

The ending..
SpoilerJude's alive??
I will definitely read the next book to find out what is going on with that cliffhanger. I'm also hoping for more answers in the next book as well.

Very different than what I initially thought it would be. I put if off because I thought it was going to be boring and wouldn’t have some special fantasy side to it. Eventually I started reading it because I didn’t have anything else to do and I was pleasantly surprised about the pace and the writing style. It’s a quick read (in my case – it took me 3 days to read it – that can also mean it’s just a very good book) and not what you expect at all. The blurb doesn’t give anything away but this story is bigger than what is said in there.

I don’t know exactly what is going on with our protagonists and that will be clarified in the next book probably (The Revolution of Mara Dyer). It’s waiting on my shelf to be read and that will happen soon. Huge cliffhanger. I could’ve seen it coming and I was thinking this would happen at the beginning of the book because something seemed off. I also partly guessed what was up with Noah before it was revealed later on in the book. Nevertheless I enjoyed it very much and was still surprised by certain plot twists.

This book is somewhat creepy at times but also thrilling and a bit romantic. I ship them so hard it hurts. Literally. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is Michelle Hodkin’s debut and let me tell you… she kicked off her career with a masterpiece.
