In today's hard world, it's nice to find a book that centers on empathy. Beyond that, Goblin Emperor distinguishes itself by being a rather non-actiony political thriller. Addison create a fun realized world with lots of its own special court jargon to digest. A welcome break for me from more serious non-fiction that I've been reading lately.

Hopepunk fantasy at its finest
So, I'm new to this sub-genre. The only other book I've read is the always excellent A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers.
That being said, I'm more than satisfied with this novel. In fact, it's easily one of my favourite books of all time, a feat not easily achievable because I'm not too eager to change much about my preferences.
The Goblin Emperor though...
It leaves me feral, leaves me feeling like there is good in the world, that we can have hope. It leaves me feeling like maybe, just maybe, things will be alright.
And that's the thing about the book. Every time you think Addison will take the narrative down a dark path, she chooses light. She chooses to take the path of hope and building bridges rather than destroying them, to steal a bit of the book's main theme.
And the characters!
I didn't think I would love Maia as much as I did, but that boy is my son now and I don't want bad things to happen to him ever. Nor do I want his retinue to suffer either, especially Csevet, Calla and Beshalar. They're all very precious to me.
All in all, I'm very satisfied and looking forward to the other books in this world. I definitely want to see what Addison does outside of the royal court.
