Listened to all of this in two sittings because I just couldn’t stop. Holy shit my entire experience growing up Mormon and then leaving as an adult and then filling my spiritual needs with substances and then looking for something more/better for actual enlightenment got validated with a slice of comedy. Pete fucking Holmes. I need to pick up a hardcover copy of this I loved it so much.

My spiritual journey felt very similar to his in some ways and not at all in others. I liked this more than I expected to!

There is something deeply strange about the sensation of starting a book and having the experience of "oh my, I identify with that feeling and remember when life was like that." Then you proceed and eventually have the experience of "oh my, that is exactly how my life feels right now." Then you look down and realize you aren't quite finished with the book, and as you proceed you cannot help but feel like the author is a strange county fair fortune teller predicting your future. You're not quite sure how accurate they are, but it certainly has the ring of truth and possibility about it. I don't think Holmes is prescribing a story ending for other young men like he was and I am. People who feel like they've escaped the damaging influence of evangelical Christian masculinity, but are still thankful for some of the lessons it taught us. I'm not sure what to do next, but Holmes does the loving thing of explaining what's worked for him, and giving you permission to try what works for you, knowing all the while that Pete will still love you.

Pete Holmes tells of his experience with God and spirituality and sexuality. Incredible and makes me want to take mushrooms and try to find God again

So, this memoir is funny. He shares his coming of age and away from the Christianity he grew up with. Despite being on a totally different path myself, I appreciated the writing and humor. It was harder for me to stay invested in the second half of the book, I enjoyed the parts about his wife but much of it felt like a spiritual guide to his new beliefs.

Sometimes Pete Holmes' podcast can be a little much for me--he can be a little too theatrical and overly enthusiastic for my tastes. However, I loved this book--it was funny and enlightening. His spiritual path is relatable to a large audience: the path from a strict Christian upbringing, to the abandonment of spirituality, to finally finding a digestible form of spirituality that doesn't center around faith. It ended up being a fun, light read about some not-so-light material.

The author tells a compelling story that is both funny (the proposal story!) and insightful. It's not an all time classic but it's a good story for people who have gone through a faith transition or are interested in comedy.

I’m not sure that if I found this book at a different time it would’ve gotten 5 stars, but listening to this while driving to an audition was weirdly perfect
