It feels a bit more fanciful than other Flavia deLuce stories. Very enjoyable.

Bradley is very much losing interest in the mystery side of his novels, but honestly at this point I'm not picking them up for crafty whodunnits anymore, anyway. Flavia and the crazy cast of characters around her are the real draw here, and I loved seeing her discreet sleuthing with Dogger in this book. As always, I would have liked more scenes with Feely and Daffy, and more insight into how the de Luces are processing the tragedy from Book 8, but I have a feeling with the wedding coming up in Book 10 we'll get a lot more of that. Onward!

We find ourselves in the this book in the middle of a family tragedy. Flavia is now 12 and we are starting to see indications that she is starting to move into a more emotional teenager who is still as adept at finding clues to a murder as ever. This book is set in a town in England where Flavia and her sisters happen to be vacationing. Just like her time in Canada, she must not only uncover the details of the murder but also the details of the area she is currently staying in and all the peoples lives there. It takes detective work to a new level. Dogger is as good a friend as ever and his and Flavia's relationship is actually brought more to the light in this book than all the previous books. This was probably one of my top 3 favorite books in the series.

I read the first one of these and wasn't impressed. I'm not sure how this ended up on my "want to read" list, but there it was. I recognized the characters almost immediately and almost just stopped it remembering my previous experience. But I kept reading and was pretty pleasantly surprised. This was better than the first. I did not read the ones in between this one, I realize from other reviews there are clearly some plots, characters etc that I'm not familiar with, but it didn't distract from this story on it's own.

I adore Flavia de Luce she’s witty and mischievous and oh so fun. This storyline was not the best but Flavia never fails me.

One problem with cozy mysteries is that since they usually take place in small towns or villages, the amount of murders starts getting a little crazy. That's especially true in this series as Flavia is a child, so you'd think she'd be a little more closely watched with some many killers on the loose. In this book Bradley fixed that issue by sending the family on vacation, where of course they stumble upon a murder. Good read if you enjoy this series.

All the greatness of what I expect from Flavia de Luce. Nice that this story takes place in a new setting while the family takes a bit of a holiday from the family home and their recent troubles. And as always, the book is much better read by Jane Entwistle than my own eyes. She IS Flavia.
