Funny and emosh and loveable x 10 million

I'd heard a lot about Beach Read from friends and fellow bookstagrammers, so went into it with medium-high expectations. It delivered in several different ways, including:

- Laugh out loud moments
- A weird yet surprisingly emotional storyline, armed with local cults and emotional familial betrayal
- A good level of spice
- Loveable characters that you'll still think about years later

For me, January was definitely a more relatable and enjoyable character to get to know. Gus had his moments, and I really enjoyed the ending - but this book very much felt like an exploration into January's mind and grief more than your typical romance book.

I'd definitely recommend, and will no doubt read again one summer in the future!

This book was a wonderful start to my 2022 year in reading. It's angst and trauma but in a way that is digestable in a romance novel. I never thought a book about writing books would or could be that interesting but it captured my whole hearted attention, i mean i even skipped class to finish the book for crying out loud. Its incredibly written and the characters aren't perfect, which to me makes them perfect. With the love (and smut) it was just a fun read and made me miss my summers by the beach. And all I could say is Augustus and January have both become my most perfect favorite people.

I really liked this book at first. I'd been in a reading slump and heard a lot of praise for this book so I picked it up, thinking it would be a fast, light-hearted book. It didn't exactly turn out that way, but I usually like to go into novels without knowing where they're going.

To me, this book felt very...full. About 75-80% in, I kept wondering when it was going to end. I would've liked things to happen concurrently rather than one after another because the momentum just died suddenly in the last third. Also I really wished the book hadn't been so myopic by focusing on two male characters: the love interest and the deceased father. I think the women/women relationships were lacking, and in general the side characters weren't fleshed out as much. They remained pretty steadily in the background.

Overall not a terrible read, but the ending left me feeling a bit lukewarm.
