Everything about this book was pure magic. The characters, the setting, the writing... It's absolutely stunning. Norrell is hilarious, Jonathan is hilarious, Segundus and Honeyfoot are the absolute best... The man with thistle-down hair.

I'm at a loss for how to describe this book. On its face, it's a story about two magicians with completely different personalities struggling to bring magic back to England. It's slow, but it's not plodding. It has no real plot, but it was fascinating. It was easy to put down, but the minute I picked it up again, I was entirely absorbed. It was like reading a historical text about a far more fascinating world than the one in which I live. And, it may be hard to believe, but I thought it felt unfinished, but not in a dishonest way (like the author just quit). The story merely stopped because it had accurately reported what had happened so far, and the rest of it hadn't happened yet. I hear Clarke is currently working on a sequel to this book! I suppose we'll have it in another ten years. :T
I've been looking forward to reading this ever since my bookshop days about 10 years ago. It is a slow growing sort of book that doesn't reach the usual sort of climaxes. Yet it is nevertheless quite engaging and even satisfying in the end.

I first read this many years ago with my sister. At the time, I thought it took too long to end, but I also thought it was great fun. My sister told me that it was the most fun of any book.
Since then, I had forgotten much of it and thought maybe I should read it again, but it's way too long for a reread.
Then, I learned about a new audio version narrated by Richard Armitage, who is, without a doubt, the very best audiobook narrator of all time. I literally jumped for joy.
With the benefit of a little more maturity, I thought it was even more fun than before. It did take too long to end. The narration, as I expected, was incredible. He has such an amazing talent.

The book is good. The plot is compelling, the characters - fairly full-fletched, the writing - really good. It really makes you believe that it’s a story of a parallel world England (or maybe even a forgotten part of our own world’s history). I just didn’t care about any of it that much - and I don’t think it was the book’s fault really.

An interesting book about the revival of magic in England in the early 1800s written in the style of that time. I enjoyed the writing and the premise, but gave up around 38%. The story definitely picked up once Strange entered the scene but it’s just too long-winded… a book to read if you have a quiet week on the beach, but I don’t have the patience otherwise.
