Loved the subject matter and the character development. I thought it went on a little long, otherwise would have been 5 stars

I finished this morning but haven't been able to get my thoughts together enough to write a review. I'm going to try now. Over all I'm glad I read this book. I almost gave up on it multiple times but I'm glad I pushed through. Jodi Picoult has a way with words that just hits your soul. I actually wish I had read this digitally only so I could've marked up some of my favorite quotes. I wrote down 3 measly quotes but there were more that I really REALLY loved!

“I’m terrified of heights.” He took her hand again, and this time, he placed it over his heart. “So please, Melina,” he said softly, “don’t make me fall alone.”

“I made a bigger table, “ Jasper said quietly, “but I've been saving a seat for you.”

“Even if you do not feel the shade of the tree you planted, others will.”

I felt like the pacing of this book was awkward. The first half was so slow. I didn't feel invested in either storyline. I kept wondering where the plot was going. There wasn't any urgency. But then things really picked up when Hundson (I don't remember if that's his name but it's close) died. Emalia was then faced with basically the worst of the worst. I don't know how the woman had the strength to keep going.

Melina was hard because I found her so unlikable. She was very self serving and honestly, a lousy friend. She kept preaching about how hard it was to be a woman to her gay friend as if he didn't know what it was like to be marginalized. I also could never figure out how she thought her friend pretending to be her would end well. I felt bad how destroyed she was in the media but she kinda deserved it.

I loved the insight into life during Shakespearean time. I love the thought that Shakespeare didn't write his own plays  and maybe it was others who wrote them. It made me really glad to be a woman in the modern age. It made me be extra appreciative of the rights I have and all the woman who came before me who paved the way.

I enjoyed Emilia and Southhamptoms love story. Even though it was doomed from the beginning. I didn't enjoy Jasper and Melina's as much. They seemed like an odd pair. Though I love how he came back 3 years later to offer her an apology. Oh I also LOVE how there was a glimpse of Emilia when Melina went to take her bow as the writer.

I really REALLY liked this book. I can’t even imagine the amount of research that went into writing it. I didn’t know how it would all fit together between the two distinct timelines before I started reading but I always love Jodi’s books so I trusted it and I was so impressed. While I loved the book as a whole I was really drawn to Emilia’s storyline and found myself most invested during those pages.

I really enjoyed the concept of this book. Jodi Picoult did a lot of research on Shakespeare and playwrights of the time. It is interesting how little we know about him, but so much is attributed to him. I would be very interesting if the concept in this book turned out to be true. I loved the parts about Emilia, however I was not such a fan of Melina. It was annoying how she just kept putting off the inevitable, which just made things worse. I get it was trying to show that not much has changed in 400 years, but it made her unlikeable for the most part. Overall, this was a great read and I would recommend it.
