4.05 AVERAGE

3.5 stars. Not as compelling as the first book with the new characters, but good enough to convince me to read the third book.

Overall I enjoyed the book. However, it's not without it faults.

I found I disliked Kelsea more as the book went on. She went from idealistic, if perhaps rash, in the first book to almost evil, at times, in this. The change in character was very frustrating.

My biggest problem with the book, however, was it's ending. I don't have a problem with cliff-hanger endings. I do have a problem with endings that don't make logical sense. If the ending were handled logically, there would be no need for a third book, except as a denouement.

I'll still read the third book when it comes out next year. I'm curious how Johansen will create tension when she failed to raise the stakes at the end of this book.

I picked this one up to skim, realized it was a sequel, read the first and enjoyed it. Then life happened and it's two years later and I'm finally getting back around to reading this one. I enjoyed it, maybe even more than the first.

Popsugar Reading Challenge: A book that's been on your TBR list for way too long.

RPL Reading Challenge: Read a book set in the future.

Super weird and not in a good way.

I really enjoyed the direction that this book went in. The visions of the past brought a new depth to this story that almost made the secondary plot more interesting than the primary plot. My only issue was in the development of the main character. Kelsea often came off as annoying and even immature, which was too much for me at times. She was such a strong character which didn't always uphold in this addition to the series.

“Always, we think we know what courage means. If I were called upon, we say, I would answer the call. I would not hesitate. Until the moment is upon us, and then we realize that the demands of true courage are very different from what we had envisioned, long ago on that bright morning when we felt brave.”

Awesome! We get to explore more of Kelsea's character. The good , bad and the grey areas.

All those juicy answers are slowly coming out! Information Pre- crossing, Kelsea's family tree, the Fetch, the Dark thing and last but not the least The Mort Queen.

Lilly- Let me say that she was a naive? in denial? spineless wimp? at first but she definitely grew to be a strong woman that girls can look up to.

Kelsea- she's more mature and she experience not only changes form the inside but from outside as well. I don't know if it's a good thing really, but at least I didn't feel like her appearance was being shoved down my throat.

The Mort Queen- I think that it's pretty obvious in The Queen of the Tearling #1 that she has history with the Tearling. What with her hatred for anything from that place. It's one of the things I like in this second instalment is that we finally know who she is!!!

Love Story: This time, this area has been explored a bit more? (guess who)

-my book!-

I really liked this second book in the series. I was never bored and it was fun. It isn't marketed as YA, but it could have been a great ya book were it not for some of the harsh language and content. Can't wait for book three.

4 Stars.

I'll admit that the "flashbacks" REALLY threw me off at first. They just didn't seem to fit. The problem for me is that I pictured this world more straight-on medieval fantasy than the new-world future/dark age mix that it ACTUALLY is.
So you know what? I had to get over it. I put the book away for a few weeks and came back to it.
And I'm happy to say that I was able to put myself back into the world Johansen has so carefully crafted, and finally see the connections between Kelsea and Lily. (Yes, I'm sitting here patting myself on the back...)

I enjoyed the first book 10xs more than this one, but I really like Kelsea as a character. The fact that she doesn't have everything together makes me want to read about her even more. It'll be very interesting to see how things are solved (or not) in book 3, and also to find out what happened with Lily!

The second book is much better than the first book.
