Book #2 down and cannot wait for Book #3. Love this story line. I feel like I can see this world. Absolutely fascinating.

Ugh so good.

TW: Rape, Abuse

It took me awhile to get into the second of this series, but I ultimately ended up enjoying it more than the first. I still have issues with the internalized misogyny inherent in Johnson's writing (though it was less obvious in this book), but the plot - particularly the jump between Kelsea's present and her visions - ended up really hooking me. Plus, lord knows I love a book where the heroine just lets loose and not only uses but revels in her power. I liked to see more of that Kelsea.

weirdly, it was a lot better than the first one... to a point where I might even call it good, and after the travesty that was [b:The Queen of the Tearling|22864842|The Queen of the Tearling (The Queen of the Tearling, #1)|Erika Johansen|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1461864815s/22864842.jpg|24267689] I really did not see that coming.

This book is epic. It is deep, intelligent, well thought out, though not very complicated which is a plus in my opinion, and super enticing. It just throws books like Throne of Glass right out the window. THIS is how a book about a queen is done.

The Invasion of the Tearling is a much better book than its predecessor. It hooked my right from the start. For such a long book, it never dragged even once and I was completely into the story right til the end. I gotta warn though, as this book contains violence and disturbingly mature content, so it is not for kids. Other than that, pick it up if you want to read a book that doesn't treat the reader like an idiot or tries to sell you romance, rather presents a truly compelling story of a Queen and her struggle of saving her land from this other evil queen.

I'm torn between rating this at 3 stars or 4 stars. Ultimately, I settled for 4 because I just love this series so much. Johansen finally reveals more about the mysterious and horrifying "dark thing", the Crossing, and how the Tearling began as the current Queen is on the edge of disaster. The pace of this book is breakneck, which is compelling and Lily's story does cover a multitude of sins. A few logical flaws in the plot and some questions about a few of the characters' motives. But Johansen's futuristic-but-medieval dystopia is so enthralling that I will just keep reading to find out what happens!
