Difficult book to give a score to, for me.

It is well written, but Lily's parts are difficult to read (and quite similar to THE HANDMAID'S TALE). It isn't clear, right up to the end, what these parts even are. And honestly, it still isn't clear to me why even they are part of Kelsea's story, other than her being curious about the very beginning of the Tearling.

**SPOILER ALERT**

Travel between dimensions and magic jewels that have been in the family for a thousand years.... Really ?

This second book is where it really starts to get interesting. Not just a medieval-seeming setting with hints of magic, but big twists in time and space. Prepare yourself for a lot of Kelsea acting like a truculent teenager. I also felt distracted, in both the first book and this one, about her lack of overall preparation for inevitable invasion. But, I still felt compelled to keep reading. This book brings around some big resolutions to a couple plot lines, while still leaving plenty open for the third and final book.

Left me wanting more, just like the first one did. Some of the time shifts confused me at first, but I got used to it. The future dystopia that Lily shows us is terrifying because it feels no more than twenty-five years of bad politics away.
