The first book was a fun introduction to the series and I was really looking forward seeing where this next book would evolve the story to. However, I found that the series, though it continued giving me the same amount of enjoyment, it had a bit of middle book syndrome where I didn't feel fully satisfied.
This book progressed the plot in a way that didn't entirely feel like progress. It gave backstory and side stories. It gave me motivations and cause and effect. It gave me a lot of things but no evolution on the plot or the themes that were impactful enough for me to feel like it was a stand out read. However I will give it it's due. What it did present was very engaging and enthralling.
Kelsea took another step down for me several times but she seemed to come back around every time. If it weren't so dramatised it would have come across as realistic human flaws but given the narrative tone and events it was a bit too over the top at times for me. I did enjoy seeing more for the secondary characters and I think they were improved upon in this instalment. We won't talk about the other queen.
The writing was very consistent from the previous book and I think that if you enjoyed the style and pace of the first book then this one will be equally pleasing.
I think the series stayed consistent in tone and pacing. I think though the plot didn't move as much as I would have liked it certainly did a lot and still feels like a great addition to the series.
The world opened up some more and we gained some answers about the history of the world which I think were well executed and interesting. There was a little more telling than showing at times but overall I think it is a very intriguing world.
Overall another entertaining entry in this series.

This is the second of what is apparently a trilogy (the third to be out later this year, I think). They go down easy. I liked this one better than the first one; the author seems to have found her rhythm and the writing is more consistent. The story is well-imagined, and the characters--not just the main character--are interesting. Even the evil bad guys are interesting. This book focuses more on the flashbacks to the time when the Tearling (this book settles the question--the land is called The Tearling and the people the Tear) was settled and founded as an escape from a sort of post-apocalyptic America in which the rich have grabbed every scrap of power and reduced everyone else to grubs. Even among the rich, women are property. The Queen of The Tearling haas a sort of psychic bond with Lily, a woman from that distant past, and so we get to see the rise of the rebellion that leads to the exodus. This plot device does, however, highlight the main thing I dislike about this series, and there reason I don't give the books 5 stars: the author can't seem to decide on genre. She mixes fairly realistic post-apocalyptic America (including cultural references from our present-day) with magical fantasy. I don't buy it, and I find it distracting to be reading a realistic novel about, say, the 23rd century, and all of the sudden flat out magic intrudes. I find it distracting and annoying. Not distracting or annoying enough, however, to keep me from staying up late three nights in a row to read the whole 500+ page book!

Apparently I had read this before and just never logged it. lol. But it was long enough ago that it was still an enjoyable/fresh reread. ;)
I love how Lily's story is interwoven with Kelsea's - tho I will say the brutality Lily suffered at Greg's hands was a little too believable. Definitely could see those passages being triggering for folks.
I really enjoy these characters and thought they all felt really real. I have so many questions about what comes next and hope book 3 gives us all the answers to the mysteries of the Tear.
