I am thoroughly pulled into this world. I love that the details of the setting slowly revealed themselves, while I happily read the Queen's (and Lily's) story. I was absorbed, but I didn't want to rush it. I may have liked this second novel in the series better than the first -- always a good sign. Fascinating.
I did not enjoy this installment as much as the first thanks to the time travel aspect. While it added something to the story, time travel always seems so far fetched to me and it's just not my thing. I'm wrapped up enough in Kelsea's story to want to continue reading, though!
such a good sequel. unmatched
so glad i decided to reread this series in college. i was too young for it the first time and now it's absolutely everything to me

I can’t wait to read book 3 and see how the story ends!
This book perfectly expands the world and charcters and I love the way it manages to capture all the things going on at once. Kelsea is not only confronted with the brewing war, she also has to manage her visions, deal with the unknown powers of the sapphires, find out more about her history, manage all the people wanting different things from her and her own wants, so that you never even get the chance to feel bored or uninvested. I love the expanding dynamics between the Queen's guard and Kelsea and how she becomes more and more tempted by power and darkness.
The only thing I didn't really love was the introduction of Lily, because while I appreciate getting the backstory, I was much more invested in Kelsea's story and feel like Lily's parts could've been shorter.
"Fortune had taken Hall away from Idyllwild, not good fortune, but the backhanded sort that gave with one hand while it stabbed with the other."
"Well, if it’s any consolation, I do plan to be on my best behavior for the rest of the night."
"And yet that plan so often fails."
"The Holy Father's talk of reward did not cheer him in the slightest; in his childhood, Tyler had seen village dogs trained in much the same way for the ring. When an animal was beaten hard enough, it would work just to not be beaten, and consider itself well rewarded."
"It's all right, Lady," Pen murmured. "I won't let you fall."
"I haven't changed, Lazarus. I've grown older, that's all. I'm still me."
"No, Lady." Mace sighed, and the sigh seemed to pass through Kelsea, a breath of doom on cold wings. "Tell yourself whatever pleasing stories you want, but you're not the girl we took from the cottage. You've become someone else."
"This entire kingdom knows you now, Queen Kelsea. You've brought us all to disaster, to satisfy your own notions of glory. Of better."
"And where is it you're going?"
"To die, I think. I hope not."
"Even I won't defy her. She is terrible."
"Let me tell you a secret, General. I am worse."

This one was even better than the first one. I am loving this series. This is one of the most unique and elaborate worlds I've ever had the privilege of visiting. Everything about this is good. It's a good story, a well built world, excellent characters, well written; it hits all the marks. Can't wait for the next one.
