I listened to this as an audiobook and expected it to be more YA, but was pleasantly surprised by the depth of character and plot development. Definitely will be listening to the next book!
I have been reading books for many, many years and it is very seldom that I feel as strongly about a book as I do "I'll Be There". I LOVE this book. I love the characters, the story and the writing. It has been about 3 weeks since I finished reading it and I am considering reading it again. My interest was captured from the first few pages and increased from there. It is a story that touched my heart, made me laugh and made me cry. It is sweet and sad and warm and suspenseful. I couldn't wait to finish it to find out how it was resolved but hated the thought of coming to the end and no longer being a part of this incredible story.
The story is told from alternating perspectives. Sam Border is the 17 year old son of a man who is a criminal and moves his two sons from town to town when the authorities get too close. Sam has not attended school since the second grade and spends most of his time trying to provide for his 12 year old brother who was special in many ways. Emily Bell is 17 and lives with her parents and younger brother. She is a good student and is basically just an average girl except that she sees every person as a part of a ripple effect--and she believes in destiny. Although Sam and Emily are polar opposites of each other, something happens when they meet and both of their lives are changed forever.
This is not your average high school romance. It is unique in the way the characters respond to life and it is unique in the way it is told. We are allowed to experience the perspectives of both Sam and Emily. One particular aspect of the story that I really enjoyed was how the minor characters were handled. The author doesn't just mention these supporting players. She gives them a story of their own and tells us how they are affected by their interaction with the main characters. This is a wonderful story and it is satisfying in so many different ways.

No. Hay.

It's really incredible (and also terrifying) to get into the mind of a psychopath and then switch back to Sam and his crush Emily. This book is mindblowing, insane, but mostly really beautiful. If you want you're world to shake up, read this one!
This one gave me chills. I loved it. The narration is original and the story makes you want to read it as fast as you can. Heart-warming. A great debut novel!

Basically, this is one of my all time favorite books. (And the sequal comes out in about a week!!!) There are many reasons why this book is so AMAZING.
One.Holly Goldberg Sloan (the author) writes from anyone and everyones point of view(s?). The chapters move fluidly from POV to POV. You hear every side of the story (you hear from an animal once) and get to know the characters even when they are only important for a few paragraphs. The book is written with an omnicent narrorator which adds interesting details you wouldn't get otherwise. I am not explaining this well...just trust me. It is really fantastic.
Two. Holly Goldberg Sloane has previously directed, wrote screen plays for, and produced movies. I believe that her experience with movies has helped her writing. The plot twists and turns constantly (Don't get too comfortable ;^) ) but it isn't confusing or hard to follow.
And Three. I'll Be There is part adventure, part romance, part comedy, part family relationships, part YA (but it could easily be for adults too), and 100% worth your time and money! :)

This book,
Words can not describe the feelings created by reading this book.
It was wonderful, it was touching, it is unable to be described.
This book takes that one moment, when you meet someone, when they touch your life, and it builds and becomes part of your life. That one moment, when you bump into that random person on the street, that one time, you do something out of the ordinary, and meet someone new and they change your life. This book takes that moment, and shows what can happen.
What can happen when a boy goes to a church to hear the music, and he hears a girl sing "I'll be there"
What can happen when that girl runs from the church and throws up, and the boy comforts her.
What can happen when they meet again, despite all odds.
What can happen when they start a relationship.
What can happen when despite all odds, they find each other again.
I could read this book a thousand times and still love it.
Holly Sloan, you did a wonderful job.

Everyone in this book seems to know all of the words to "I'll Be There" but for the life of me I can't even think of the tune. I feel so left out.
I love this book! Fun to read and a little bit of mystery to keep you turning the page.
