Please save yourself the trouble and don't read this book. The ending is abrupt and extremely frustrating.

Here's what's wrong with it:
1. The character arcs were cut short. By the end of the book, there are no changes in any of their relationship dynamics nor any meaningful changes in personality.
2. The ending makes no sense. Why choose this? Why, if there are 4 people on the ship, does only 1 of them get to write anything? Why did she write so much about her own personal life?
3. The author sidelines her own characters to present some open-ended questions--but these questions feel much more shallow than the author thinks they are. Will astronauts still be relevant in the future? Obviously, yes. Humans have always been curious. Astronauts don't impact most people's daily lives right now, and yet they still exist, right now.
4. Inaction is also a choice. The 2 choices presented were to help people on Earth rebuild or to help people by studying more alien life. They chose the worst choice: to help no one.
5. After preventing the protagonist from committing suicide, the other crew members decided to accept suicide themselves? That outright invalidates the scene the author just wrote! I cannot believe she wrote and published a whole book without realizing this!

The build-up in the rest of the book felt like it was leading up to something tragic, disturbing, or shocking at the end. It certainly did, but it was an unpleasant and disappointing shock.

I very much enjoyed the slightly more raw emotional experience of this book compared to others.  The scene involving the airlock really hit me as what a human mind can feel under stress, even after overcoming impossible circumstances and being _out_ of danger.

I thought the ending was interesting but not particularly compelling.  It didn't shock me or twist anything, it was just very straightforward and did definitely make me think about what space exploration means for humanity, in fact what all scientific exploration and study means to humanity.

In general, it was yet another good book by Becky Chambers and I was not disappointed, even if the plot was not particularly exciting.  The characters were pretty good, but without enough time to really get to know them.  4/5 rating, solid B.

Listened to this as an audiobook during a road trip and it kept me engaged the entire time.  I don't think that this will be enjoyed by all since for a sci-fi it focuses more on the crew and slice-of-life moments, rather than the planets they explore, and the discoveries they make.

It does bring up the topic that there is a lot to be said about the ethics of science and experimentation.  I think it all can be boiled down into something along the lines of having good intentions does not inherently guarantee that anyone/thing remains unharmed in the end or even in the midst of the process.  This is true for the scientists themselves and/or their subjects.

Becky Chambers has done an excellent job of making distinct and memorable characters that feel real because the book runs  the gamut of human emotions.  There's quite a bit of existential dread, and it can be rather heavy at times, but it also has it's moments of fun, enchantment, excitement, joy, and happiness.

This book is really short, just around 150 pages. I really enjoyed it! The science was told very realistically without bogging down the story too much. I had no trouble suspending my disbelief in this. I loved the camaraderie among the crew as well. There was also commentary in the book about the purposes of science, and we change as individuals that I really enjoyed. So, if you want a short story about space travel and seeing new worlds, this is a great book for that purpose.
