If you were dissatisfied with book 2, this one fixes a lot of the problems. Tbh 2 and 3 feel like they're the same book separated into two parts. Baru goes through a lot of character growth in this book, which is great to see, and we get to know more about a lot of the side characters too. We also get some more fantasy/sci-fi elements in the story, some of which I believe we'll see more of in the next book. I'll be waiting with bated breath for the next one!!!

forgive baru cormorant, she did all that, but it means she got to tell her master that he's been beaten by a dead homosexual woman, so actually it was all worth it

hey yourself <- two words that made me start crying real life tears

God this was SO fricking good. I love being impressed by authors, and I just think that Dickinson is SO impressive and this book really showcases that. It’s just such a brilliant, thoughtful world - basically our own, but more fascinating, except not more fascinating because it’s basically our own?? Idk how Dickinson threads that needle, but damn is the needle threaded.

Anyway, I definitely liked this book more than the second in terms of plot, which probably isn’t shocking since I love a redemption arc. It’s such a beautiful story of human resilience and the power of forgiveness and love and community care even as it doesn’t shy away from presenting the genuine horror and evilness that comes from being alive…

Summary thoughts: perhaps a bit slower paced than my usual preference, but Baru is one of my favorite characters I’ve ever read about, and I’m truly so happy that the ending was satisfying enough to tide me over until the next book eventually gets written… AND I’m so excited for the next book (whenever it comes! I’ll be patient for you, Seth <3)
