Tony Hillerman continues to write novels that bring the Navajo tribal lands to life as well as the people that populate it. Each novel creates larger than life landscapes that dwarf the man made artifacts and structures. In this novel, he brings more depth and characterization to the individuals that populate it while maintaining a fast-paced and well thought out plot. An excellent read.

Another novel in the Leaphorn-and-Chee series, or perhaps it should be called A-White-Man-Does-Bad-Things-on-the-Rez series.
Perhaps bad editing, but there were a few gaps, slip-bys and jumps in logic in places and redundancy on others. Otherwise, more of the same.

yikes. i keep reading these looking for one that will top The Dark Wind, but so far the first Hillerman i read was the best.
Hunting Badger's paper-thin plot & clumsy foreshadowing is redeemed for me by some believable, genuinely touching character growth. not redeemed enough for me to ever reread, though.

A later Hillerman which isn't his best by any means, but still has some of the life which some of the late Hillerman's lacked.

As good as usual. This takes a great part of its plot from the true events near Durango in the summer of '98 when a Cortez cop was shot while making a routine traffic stop.
This story supposedly takes place after that, and is based on it. The Ute Mountain Casino is held up, one guard is killed & another wounded by the thieves. Chee & Leaphorn come in at different edges of the investigation, but end up working together to figure it out.
And Jim may FINALLY be over Janet Peet! Thank God!!
