We really liked this book! I had read comments from other Sonlighters who said it was long and boring, so I was a little worried. My daughter loved it and always wanted me to read more. The dialect was a little challenging to read at times, but I managed okay. My younger kiddos didn't enjoy this story, but there was nothing scary that I didn't want them hearing. This was another great Sonlight choice!

One of the books that I read as a kid that has stayed with me. A boy experiences the civil war through letters from a teacher along with news of his brother and other relatives.

It takes a lot for me to rate a book five stars, but this is one of my favorites of this year. Every once in awhile I read a book and think it couldn't possibly be written better, and this is one of those. Heart-wrenching, true, and emotional, this book is a great read. We listened to the audio version narrated by Tom Stechshulte, and he narrates with all the gravity and warmth this book deserves. Don't miss out on this one.

3.5 - I liked how much his character grows throughout the book and what happens to different people, and it being in the perspective of a boy growing up, it's definitely one of those coming-of-age books. I don't tend to really like those, but this one was good.

3 stars because it had some really slooooow parts. However, the writing was very beautiful, and the story was so real. I loved the historical details that were so naturally woven into dialogue and letters; I loved that the author didn't sugar coat the hardship of that era, and that she made her characters suffer. I loved that none of the characters was perfect. I loved how Hunt developed Jethro into a young man with a very mature perspective on the world. I loved that the ending was happy, but not unrealistic. Really, it's a fantastic little book!! It's just hard to get past some of the very slow passages.
