This made me cry a bit. I loved the friendship between Alex and Claire!
Thought-provokingly brilliant in its execution. At 20% I wasnt sure and almost gave up. At 25% I had to finish it.
Mindy drags you into the minds of three people, one of them an arrogant, entitled Lothario who I disliked. Our main heroine, numbed by several devastating events in her life, slowly befriends a girl who has her own issues, and catches the eye of the boy. That is the story, but that isn't what the book is about. The book is about flawed people who try, against their baser natures, to do the right thing, to be good, to be better.

I picked this book up because I had heard great things but I was also surprise to see that it was hardly mentioned on booktube or bookstagram. So I went into this book really knowing what to expect and wow! I was blown away. I feel The Female of the Species is a book that will stay with you long after you have read it because thats exactly what happened to me.
This book delves on heavy topics such as rape culture and long-lasting effects of sexual assault and how these issues are seen biased when it comes to gender. I understand that because of that, this book might not be for everyone but I feel it is book many should consider reading.
The three points of view in the story worked really well in putting the reader inside the mind of three different people and how they view this society that usually finds humor or non importance in these serious issues. This book was honest and felt so real and at times I found myself putting the book down because it was hard to read certain parts. However, it did not deter me from loving this book and by the end of it I was devastated.
This is a book I would highly recommend to anyone who is willing to give it a try and I hope that it leaves a big as impact as it did for me.

I love Mindy McGinnis. Love her, love her, love her. She got me with Not a Drop to Drink and has now secured my super fandom with The Female of the Species.
She's clearly got a type when it comes to her heroines. Capable, strong, wise beyond their years in some ways but also awkward and anti-social because of their individual circumstances. In Alex Craft's case, it's hard to be social when your peers are thinking about boys and prom and college and you're thinking about.
I loved this book. Couldn't put it down once I picked it up. Read it in a day. Mindy McGinnis is my kind of storyteller and this was my kind of book. Depravedly dark but all shining bright like a star all at the same time.
PS If this is what high school is like these days, my daughter will never, ever leave the house except for school. Sorry, Charlotte.

Wow. I had been wanting to read this book for a while and kept putting it off. Don’t know why. It was amazing. I was enraptured from start to finish. Mindy McGuiness is great at writing strong but flawed characters.

Wow. I thought this was going be a bit of an contemporary assassin gimmick, where the teenage girl takes revenge on the boys in her school for sexually assaulting women.
But it was so complex, the characters so fleshed out. I didn’t think I would love Alex as much as I did. I loved all the main characters, even Jack was complex. I felt like it really reflected being a teenager, dramatic and full of alcohol and relationships.
But what I liked most was it’s discussion of rape culture, how Alex called out the other girls for criticising Branley for being typically hot and using her body to get men. Alex didn’t put up with any of that shit, even though it could have been stronger, and I didn’t like the way jack kept wanting Branley to be “the other Branley” eg wearing jeans, no makeup, in the mud, which was a bit judgemental honestly.
The friendship of Claire and Alex was the highlight, there was so much growth in such a short book. Recommend. Bloody, brutal, and fantastic.

if jack died i wouldve started doing cartwheels around my room
This book isn't an easy read. It deals with rape culture, with murder and doesn't shy away from any of it.
Alex does what I think we all sometimes thibk about when we hear or are affected by sexual assault. It makes you root for her even though you know what she's done is wrong.
