Wow. This is a book that is going to stay with me for a long time. Don't let the cute, yellow cover fool you, it's a heavy and hard read. Yet one that I couldn't put down until I had finished it, wiping tears from my eyes. I started it expecting one thing, a book about a strong, female, feminist character who isn't afraid to deal with the monsters that the justice system isn't able to put away, but it ended up being so much more complicated. My favorite theme of this book is the importance of female friendships and looking out for one another, and I appreciate the way it tackles the very real issue of rape culture. It's not an easy read, but I think it's an important one.
4.5 stars! Dark and twisty and insanely addicting, Female of the Species is an unforgettable read. I had NO idea what it was about going into it, but I heard good reviews so I decided to give it a try. I’m so glad I did! I just. I have NO WORDS! Insane and crazy and I couldn’t stop! A unique read I won’t forget anytime soon.
This book had my complete attention from beginning to end. It was a love story wrapped up in craziness, and it was wonderful. I fell in love with the characters, especially Alex. She's the type of person I would love to be friends with. This story was very well-written and kept me captivated until the last page. Definitely will read again!!

This did not work for me at all, and I think it's in a big part due to the marketing: we are told that this is a story about rape and a girl killing her sister's rapist but then I read almost half of it and I'm still going where is it? Where is this story that the summary announced? Why is it wasting so much time with the pov of some fuc*boy, and why is there girl hate in there? Why is the pretty cheerleader hated? WHY IS SHE MORE VILAINIZED THAT THE ACTUAL RAPIST OF THE STORY? Or the boys that use her for their own personal benefit??? Why is the main female character another not like other girl™️ cliché? Why is the preacher's daughter litterally nicknamed that? On which planet??
Why is there pretty much nothing related to the sister who was raped? I know I stopped reading this at pretty much the halfway mark but still I choose to read that book for that specifically not for some high school drama between girls hating each other, and the male character's pov which is sexist and male gaze-y as hell. Why do we keep inserting random unnecessary boys in narrative that should exclude them? Just yikes.
And the reading didn't work for me, on one hand you have gritty atmosphere with the moments in the shelter and other you just have the sexualisation of the cheerleader by the male character, and god the moment where they found the sister's body, am I suppose to feel bad for him? Cause I don't, I feel bad for her.
I read some spoilers because I knew the book wasn't working for me and god the fact that he's a love interest grosses me out so much.
I just decided to stop reading because it infuriated me to no end. I wish we could actually discuss rape culture and the aftermath etc in YA books but I keep getting disappointed with those books over and over again. It's truly a shame.

A dark contemporary that doesn't shy away from a blunt expression of the hardships of being a teenage girl. An important book that all women should read.
