I was absolutely blown away by this book. It was dark, terrifying, disturbing, and seriously violent... and yet it is one of the best books I've ever read. I could not, would not, put it down once I started reading, and it has haunted me for months in the way that any good book will, by popping up in your thoughts when you least expect it and making you want to read it all over again despite all the horrible things it made you feel. Alex is the kind of character that all characters aspire to be - she is fierce, unapologetic, and so real that she stands in front of you with every turn of the page. I have never been so emotionally invested in a murderer, but Alex is a murderer worth every penny of the investment.
THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES by Mindy McGinnis is dark and painful to read, but oh, the writing! Gorgeous!

This story was so good. I had been warned that it was an intense story, which it lived up to. But the characters and their development were intriguing and thought provoking. I often found myself debating the morality of certain events as they happened in the progression of the story.
I highly recommend this story.
Read-a-like for Sadie (also a great audiobook)

“But 'boys will be boys', our favorite phrase that excuses so many things, while the only thing we have for the opposite gender is 'women', said with disdain and punctuated with an eye roll.”
Holy fuck, I loved this.
This book is so so important, dealing with important topics such as rape culture, slut shaming, as well as a pretty accurate portrayal of what date/gang rape look like. It's intense, it's brutal, it's heartbreaking, it's dark, but these stories must be told.
I absolutely loved this and will be thinking about this for a long, long time. It's one of those rare gems for me when I become absolutely obsessed with it. The Female of the Species has made it to my ALL time favorite books shelf. And that is not an easy feat.

Now I truly understand what people mean when they say a book came to them at just the right time.
EDIT: knocking down a star because I wasn't a fan of the romance. and didn't feel as connected to the other narrators besides alex.

At first, I was really intrigued by the novel and it really does start with a bang. The first sentence speaks for itself- "This is how I kill someone". The problem was that I was expecting something completely different. Somewhere in the middle of the book, it became more of a teenage drama and romance than a story about Alex Craft's weird personality quirk. As I was reading I wished that her character was fleshed out more and that her inner desire for revenge was further explored. Although there were some great themes and ideas discussed throughout the novel, I felt like there was some unnecessary drama that made the book quite irritating in the middle. And although I felt this way, I LOVED the ending. It was a very impactful way of finalizing the novel and I felt it came back to the initial ideas and the initial plot.
“Violence begets violence,
and if I want to be a cog in that wheel,
I have to accept when it stops on me.”
i finished this book about 12-13 hours ago, I stayed up and took the time to finish this...it's my 1st completed book of 2017
i was reading this this from about 12:15 this morning, till around 1:15 am
Alex died and I cried, and cried some more. I was so shocked I didn't even know what to think or say.
This novel was just as good as I anticipated it to be, actually better than that. It was thought-provoking and a rollercoaster through each character's physical, mental, and emotional struggles and feats. I'm so glad I got to be with Alex, Peekay (Claire), Jack, Branley, Park, Sara, Adam, and all the others in their small town in Ohio. This book introduced me to rape culture and hat death can do to a person. I feel like everyone should read this so they can be exposed and enlightened to how real the threat and possibility of child molestation and rape is. Overall, this book was a terrific read. Truly a magnificent piece of literature.
