I found out about this book thanks to [a:Roxane Gay|3360355|Roxane Gay|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1407278304p2/3360355.jpg]'s chapter in [b:Bad Feminist: Essays|22552584|Bad Feminist Essays|Roxane Gay|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1403540065s/22552584.jpg|26563816] about unlikable female characters. She was definitely right to characterize the protagonist as unlikable. Other great descriptors could include self-centered, oblivious, and sociopathic. I personally loved this book, but I understand how it could throw someone off. It goes from light-hearted and goofy to wondering if maybe you've misjudged the protagonist the entire time and being legitimately worried about her psychological state. It might be jarring to be laughing one minute to worrying about the safety of others the next, but I enjoyed the ride.
i noticed the attempt at being funny but it wasn't exactly my type of humor. a very chaotic and morally questionable "adventure".

This is a tricky book. I initially heard about it on NPR during one of Nancy Pearl's pieces. I really enjoyed it, but I think if I had read it any earlier I would have absolutely hated it. The narrator is so self-absorbed, but her obsession with Treasure Island is absolutely hysterical. I started the book when I was really angry and disengaged with my job and it was so absurd that it completely hit the spot. I want to recommend it a lot, but it's definitely not for everybody.
Also it was really difficult to tell people that I was reading Treasure Island!!!, but not that Treasure Island.
