Wow. It has been awhile since I've read a story with such a deplorable main character. The unnamed woman searching for herself makes me feel so much better about my life and my own personal relationships. The basic story is that this woman reads Treasure Island and then starts to live her life by what she thinks are the four principles (core values) of the book: BOLDNESS, RESOLUTION, INDEPENDENCE, and HORN-BLOWING. She does this in the worst ways possible and manages to hurt multiple people along her journey. What I really liked was that the other characters also had flaws which were real, thus making the book feel like it could happen (obviously to a friend of a friend or relative of a friend of a friend). The end left me wondering if she was ever going to be able to "Steer the boat, girlfriend."
Which, is also how Sara Levine inscribed the book to me after I met her. She is personally charming and quite wonderful. I am excited to read future works written by her.

Genius. When you can laugh at a murder, you're reading something worth reading.
Hilarious and as gratifying as the Seinfeld series finale. The ending was outrageous and exactly what was needed for the narrator. Justice for Little Richard.
Ok, I am never going to finish this book. It was funny to start, and I definitely laughed out loud at the beginning. But, even in ridiculous satire, you have to find a character to hold onto, and I just lost interest. The joke got less funny the further I read.

oh shit, I really liked this book!
it started it slow for me, mostly because I was thinking "what the hell is happening" but then I just sank into it.
this book has the same whimsical absurdity of etgar keret stories that I just love and the author is an excellent writer.
the protagonist is unbearable to the reader but how the author was able to convince me of her lack of reality was amazing.
this was a great fun absurd and hilarious read and it is just the right length.
in wondering if I missed some more insider jokes about treasure island seeing as how my only experience with the book is Muppet's treasure island, but it definitely didn't affect my enjoyment.
definitely recommend for those who enjoy reading hilarious exercises in storytelling and writing.

Finally a book that doesn't make me feel badly about how often I've been listening to next to normal
Pro: This book is never boring, and sometimes it is pretty funny. The premise is pretty fun, too, especially at first. Also, it's short.
Con: The narrator. Heavens, she gets irritating. And since the narrator is pretty much the book in this case, I didn't enjoy the novel much after 50 pages or so. I think we're supposed to laugh at how selfish and clueless she is, but it isn't that funny. This may have made a better short story, come to think of it.
All told, meh.

This book was bonkers, and not in the usual way. It was painfully mundane, and hilarious, while being over the top ridiculous and then ending in an absolutely painful to watch ending. Our protagonist ( of sorts? Antihero isn't right either) is obsessed with Treasure Island, and it's core values, boldness, resolution, independence and horn blowing. She's determined to live her life by these values... in her mind. In real life she's... not. I don't know if she's having a mental break or is just a peculiar type of un-self aware monster but good lord. I kept waiting for some kind of redemptive.... anything but it never happens. She descends from petty cruelty to petty cruelty, never caring what she's doing to other people or how she makes them feel. It's super entertaining, but also very uncomfortable to watch an unpleasant person become even more unpleasant while being so convinced of their own grandeur.
