A great bit of near-future sci-fi combined with some commentary on the music industry. The ending left me wanting more with these characters, so I would not be upset if this is a test-run for a novel-length expansion of the story.

"Then Jasper is looking at me the way he’s looked at a hundred girls and his hand is in my hair, sliding down my neck, and my face is burning, and the next thing I know I start to for-real kiss him. On stage. While Zeke sings, “ooh-wee-ooh,” and Aiden strums his guitar, and the crowd is so loud, I can’t even hear my ear monitors."

That's the sexiest thing I've ever read. I want that to happen to me (with a girl obviously).

LGBT+ rep:
gay trans male mc
bisexual male mc
nonbinary mc (only defined as “I don’t even think I’m a ‘boy’ all the time.")

Other rep:
unnamed kind of neurodivergence in an mc

CW:
homophobia
ableism
controlling manager/company
forced closeting
forced silence
male-as-default language (using "hey guys" to refer to groups of mixed genders)

This was, thankfully, minus all the racist and rapey shit that pervaded Docile... but. I don't know. I was super underwhelmed and there's every likelihood I'll forget I ever read it once I hit post. Also at one point I legit wondered if this was fanfiction of (Stylinson) fanfiction? Is that even a thing? YMMV on whether that's a compliment or not ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

One million stars for the gorgeous cover tho.

This was like an episode of Black Mirror. Think the Miley Cyrus epsiode (my fav).

Tyler is the heart-throb of the boyband. He is expected to be wholesome and available. According to management kissing another member on stage doesn't fit that image.

When Tyler and Jasper continue their romantic relationship, Jeff their manage takes control of the situation... literally. Each member has an implant that helps tune them when singing, and when Tyler refuses to listen to Jeff his voice is silenced.

This short story is about the importance of ones voice, to have control of it and to be in control. when that control is taken away from Tyler, he sees the brutal reality of his situation.

This was so intriguing, I wish it was a full lenght novel. Or a full blown Black Mirror episode (*cough*Netflix get on that*cough*).

Heart wrenching and touching.

An interesting and novel look (to me possibly) at how much we try an blend in to what is expected and planned for each of us, but more specifically for people who are considered different.
