So incredibly sweet! It was just as good as I remember it being, and it’s such a well written book for preteens.
Die "Keeper of the Lost Cities"-Reihe von Shannon Messenger steht schon seit vielen Jahren auf meiner Wunschliste und ich habe verzweifelt auf einen deutschen Verlag gewartet, der die hochgelobte Reihe endlich auf den deutschen Markt bringt. Zum Glück hat der arsEdition-Verlag meiner Warterei ein Ende bereitet. Ich war also voller Vorfreude auf den ersten Teil der Reihe und meiner Erwartungen waren ziemlich hoch. In vielen Rezensionen für die englischen Ausgaben, wird die Reihe mit Harry Potter verglichen und dementsprechend neugierig war ich dann natürlich.
Zu aller Erst muss ich sagen, mit Harry Potter hat das Buch nur wenig gemein. Immerhin geht es hier nicht um Hexen und Zauberer, sondern um Elfen. Die Welt aus der Sophie, unsere Protagonistin stammt, ist eine ganz andere als wir sie aus Harry Potter kennen. Ich verstehe aber wieso einige Rezensent:innen Ähnlichkeiten sehen. Ein Kind, dass das Gefühl hat anders zu sein, es wird in eine völlig fremde Welt getaucht und wird dort mit seiner bzw. ihrer Vergangenheit konfrontiert. Als Leser habe ich mich aber komplett auf die Geschichte eingelassen und habe das Suchen nach Parallelen zwischen den sehr verschiedenen Geschichten schnell sein lassen. Was ich aber sagen muss, die Autorin von "Keeper of the Lost Cities" hat es geschafft, dass ich dasselbe gespürt habe beim Lesen wie bei Harry Potter.
Es war ein wohliges Gefühl, ein aufgeregtes und doch fühlte es sich auch nach etwas Bekannten an. Nach zu Hause.
Abgesehen von besagter Harry Potter Reihe, hat es bis dato noch keine weitere Reihe geschafft, diese Gefühle bei mir zu wecken. Das heißt nicht, dass alle anderen Reihen, die ich gelesen habe schlecht waren, es fehlte nur das genannte Gefühl.
Aber zurück zum Buch. Sophie war eine tolle Protagonistin. Ich mochte sie wirklich sehr und hab direkt mit ihr mitgefiebert. Sie ist ein mutiges, neugieriges und aufgewecktes Kind, die sich von anderen nicht runtermachen lässt. Sie möchte ihre Ziele mit eigener Kraft erreichen und ist dabei unglaublich ehrlich. Ich fand es so toll, wie Sophie sich weiterhin treu bleibt und erkennt was richtig und was falsch ist. Abgesehen von Sophie mochte ich auch die anderen Charaktere sehr.
Dexter fand ich so sympathisch, lustig und cool! Wie er Sophie hilft und sich von ihrer Erscheinung nicht einschüchtern lässt. Wie er auch über ihre Fehler hinweg sieht und einfach ein treuer Freund ist, hat mich auch berührt. Fitz dagegen war mir zu glatt und oberflächlich. Ich bin froh das noch Keefe dazu kam, der das genaue Gegenteil von Fitz ist und anscheinend für jedes Abenteuer zu haben ist. Ich bin sehr gespannt wie es mit dem vierer Gespann in den nächsten Bänden weitergeht.
Die Handlung fand ich von Anfang an fesselnd. Wie Sophie die Welt, die sie kannte zurücklassen und sich in der Welt der Elfen neu einleben musste, fand ich ziemlich interessant und auch spannend. Die verschiedenen Unterrichtsfächer und der Aufbau der Welt haben mich total begeistert. Auch hier bin ich sehr gespannt, was sich noch alles verbirgt.
Der Schreibstil der Autorin war auch sehr einfach zu lesen und empfand ich als sehr angenehm. Dadurch bin ich einfach super schnell durch die Geschichte gekommen und die verschiedenen Plot-Twists haben auch dafür gesorgt, dass ich komplett in die Welt eingetaucht bin und das Buch am liebsten am Stück verschlungen hätte.
Ich freu mich jetzt schon sehr auf die Folgebände dieser magischen und tollen Reihe. Nicht umsonst habe ich alle acht Teile euphorisch vorbestellt und kann es kaum noch erwarten!

Finally got around to reading this after my students demanded I did! And... I liked it? I didn't love it though...
There are a few things I liked here: the worldbuilding, the magic system (though I didn't 100% understand it), the friendships Sophie made.
Things I didn't like as much: a lot of elements felt under-developed and I finished the book with almost as many questions as I had when I started... maybe it gets better?
Overall, I just wanted MORE. More detail, more intricately developed characters and motivations... Still, I can absolutely see why some MG readers are loving this series (I just prefer [b:Amari and the Night Brothers|53240817|Amari and the Night Brothers (Supernatural Investigations, #1)|B.B. I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Keeper of the Lost Cities" by Shanon Messenger and was kept captivated by the worldbuilding and characters Shannon Messenger created. I was especially pleased to receive this book as a Goodreads Giveaway (thank you!)
The author's use of fantasy applied in new and novel ways - and different twist on magic - was refreshing and delightful to read. The protagonist Sophie's story was engaging and her emotional arc believable. I look forward to reading more of the many novels set in this world.

This was a good read, but just not the book for me. I think the world was interesting and it felt very reminiscent of Harry Potter in a good way. Shannon Messenger wrote a compelling story with lots of twists and turns. I was pulled in and despite not planning on reading the rest of this series, I did look up the plot summaries just to see how things played out. I think for a child this is just the right mix of light hearted fun, adventure and intensity. I personally just wanted more in-depth world building and character work, but I think that comes with the territory of a children's book.
My big complaint is the lack of diversity in this book. There are no LGBTQIA+ characters and no characters of color. In fact, the one character with brown eyes is the outlier and seen as less beautiful then the white, blue eyed elves... it is a weird way to set up a book. I kept thinking about that throughout this book as we were introduced to more and more characters and all of them were white. For this reason, I think there might be more modern children's books I would recommend before this one.
Would I say this is my favorite book ever? No, but I think it would be good for its intended audience, children. It would be a fun read for the parents as well. I will say this might be a good swap for those Harry Potter fans who want a book for their kids that has a magical school but doesn't support J.K. "the TERF" Rowling. There is the element of lot of political intrigue, two factions fighting for the world, and an orphan who develops found family. I will still be seeking out a series with more representation as this was extremely white!
