This was my first book by Ann Cleeves and I‘ll definitely read more! Vera is one of the most interesting book characters I‘ve met in a while, and I actually enjoyed that for once there wasn‘t the complicated love life that usually seems to be mandatory for any detective.

This was a great one! I'm sorry that I'm now caught up with the series. I hope a new one comes out soon.

This book has a very interesting plot. There's loads of twists and you don't get a final answer about the death until the last few chapters.
But I have to say that I was glad to get this book finished as I wasn't as hooked as I expected to be when I picked up this book.
I would recommend this book though, and I would probably read another from this author too.

The Darkest Evening is another addition to Anne Cleeves’s popular Vera series. It has an interesting plot, but was a bit encumbered with filler content in some places. Though it’s technically part of a series, The Darkest Evening can be read as a standalone.

One snowy evening, Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope comes upon an abandoned car with a child inside. She grabs the child and seeks shelter at the nearest estate, Brockburn, which also happens to house her not-so-distant relatives. The search for the baby’s caretaker is on, despite the weather. But after the baby’s mother is found dead on Brockburn’s grounds, the mystery thickens, and Vera is on the case.

This is my first Anne Cleeves novel, and I was impressed by her ability to weave an intricate plot without being obvious to its trajectory. The first half of the novel dragged a bit, which is why this wasn’t a four star read for me. However, I do think that the resolution to the novel is satisfying, and that fans of this series will be pleased.

An ARC was generously provided by NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press in exchange for my honest review.

My very high expectations were fully met: a dark mystery set in a landscape with grey and menacing skies and Vera Stanhope leading the way to the solution of two murders within a small community.

Vera is still a bit of a bully, but her sharp edges have once again softend a bit and her crew deeply cares for her. The characters forming the mystery are all beautifully depicted with flesh on their bones and twisted minds working on different levels of evil.

One of the best books I've read this year. Please Mrs. Cleeves, could you please try to write faster ?

This is a compelling read with lots of compassion for each character’s foibles. The setting is a murder discovered during a snowstorm, so it was a fun snow week read!
