One of my favourite Vera books to date.
This time, Vera is facing that other branch of the family in the course of her investigation and some memories come fluttering at the edge of her memory to try and confuse her but, as usual, she and her team find their culprit.
I never really liked Holly and for part of the book I wished her gone but she redeemed herself a little towards the end. Obviously, Joe is the perfect sidekick for Vera whose unspoken battle for Joe’s wife, Sal, makes for some funny bits at time.
I just love that series and now feel at a loss waiting for the new book to come out.

Although I’ve watched several episodes of the tv show ‘Vera’ this was my first time to read one of the books on which the show is based. As a result, it was with a slight sense of trepidation that I opened the first page – would the ‘book version’ Vera resemble that bolshy, strong and loveable character so ably brought to life by Brenda Blethyn or would she be a completely different detective?
Thankfully, my fears were put aside within the opening paragraphs and it instantly became clear that the Vera of our tv screens, is very much based on the original book character and several of the same police officers also appear, so it was no stretch of the imagination to see her in the books and I instantly felt at home. (A quick FYI for fans - On 14 January 2020, it was confirmed that the show had been renewed for an eleventh series, which will air in 2021.)
‘The Darkest Evening’ is book number eight by Anne Cleeves in the Vera series and like any experienced author, Cleeves writes in a manner that welcomes both new and returning fans to the series. There is sufficient information provided about the characters to allow us to follow their stories at present but also enough to ensure that I am curious about their pasts and want to know more so I’m sure that I’ll be reading the previous books. For example, I’m curious about Holly who is a newer member of the team and her slightly fractious relationship with Vera so in order to learn a little more …..

Truthfully, I was kind of hesitant about reading this because when I requested the ARC, I’d mistakenly thought I was getting book #2 in her other series, but it’s actually #9 in the Vera Stanhope series. Oops!
I had selfish reasons for reading "The Darkest Evening". I am a huge "Vera" fan (on Britbox), however I have never read one of Ann Cleeves books. I was curious to see if the book would hold up to my expectations. "Boy, oh boy, did it ever! I loved it!"
D.I. Vera Stanhope, is driving in a snowstorm when she comes across a car that has slid off the road. Upon further inspection she finds a baby strapped in a car seat. At first glance, it appears the driver has left the baby unattended. But, for what reason? Did they go looking for help? Were they injured or too rattled to care for the child?
I must confess, I was ahead of the game from having watched so many episodes of "Vera" (played by Brenda Blethyn), during the pandemic. I was aware that things are never what they first appear to be in Ann Cleeves mysteries. She always has some great twists in the story.
As I read the book, I could hear Vera's awesome accent in my head. I was not familiar with the plot in the book before reading it, but found it to be absolutely riveting! The storylines are clean and only contain very mild violence. I will be reading many more Ann Cleeves books soon. "The Darkest Evening" is available now for purchase.
Thank you NetGalley and St.Martin's Press, for allowing me to get my (guilty pleasure) "Vera fix". Ann Cleeves you ROCK!

Wow! What a read this was!
Often personal stories of detectives can be boring, and predictable, but not this one.
This book had me turning pages, and wanting to do nothing else.

My first Ann Cleeves book but it won’t be my last! Excellent mystery that kept me guessing until the end!
This book was okay but it was bit bland also plot was bit too slow for my likeing. The ending was fine and The cover of book was okay also the charters were okay but they needed to flash little bit more.
