I always meant to keep reading this, but it was very infuriating and tough to read. I was borrowing the book from my old boss and had to give the book back before leaving that job. Hopefully one day, I will pick it back up and finish it.

I have been wanting to read this novel since high school. So I have waited almost 15 years to get through this piece of history. Treaties, broken promises, war, lives lost, and lies, but yet something felt like it was missing from the text.

This is an important piece of history and one of my favorite topics to discuss and explore: Indigenous history is American history.

Five stars for historical and cultural significance. Shatters any illusion that America was founded on values of dignity and respect for anyone different, especially non-Europeans and not of the accepted religion. Heartbreaking accounts of pervasive bullying, oppression, and violence for people of a different culture fueled by greed, ignorance, and fear. Glimmers of humanity are betrayed by injustice.

This is a life-changing book that will endure because it reveals the truth of the darkness within humankind.

“They made us many promises, more than I can remember, but they never kept but one; they promised to take our land, and they took it.”
- Red Cloud

This was a devastating read. Having grown up alongside Indigenous nations in what is today Canada, I know how horribly Indigenous people have been treated. Or, at least, I thought I did. Really, my knowledge barely scratched the surface of it.

Every single settler (and if you are not Indigenous to the land you live on, you are a settler) should be ashamed. We profit from the genocide of people who, by and large, had been willing to share with us. It’s horrific.

This is an important read, particularly if you have any interest in North America, history, and/or human rights. I had to take breaks in between reading sessions because the topic is so heavy, but I’m so glad to have a better understanding of the real history.

Made me too angry and upset. The reality is not surprising but makes it a devastating read. More political than I was expecting

I liked it and I liked the perspective it offered. It was a slow read to start but it got better. I really appreciated it.
