A genuinely enjoyable read, comforting like an old horror tale you know but with new ways to instill fear and fright with very visual details. I had no clue going in what kind of story this would be; picked it up mainly due to its recent accolades, which are well deserved for Sarah Read. Wasn't expecting a younger adult perspective, but enjoyed it nonetheless. It's a short read, so not fully immersive, but something nice to have on hand when you need a good book to sink into for a little while.

This was a delightfully creepy, atmospheric novel. I could feel the cold and smell the dirt at the school. There were a few twists that kept me guessing. I recommend this if you like atmospheric gothic stories.

Unpleasant hijinks at an English boy’s school just after WW 1. Warning for a labyrinthine manor house converted to a school with lots of weird twisty dark passages. Contains torture, mutilation, & abuse.

I don’t know what I was thinking when I started reading this, because it’s way to dark for me to read at this point in this timeline. But TBH I didn’t expect it to be quite THIS dark.

Yikes.
