Was a little slow for the first roughly half of the book, and most of the main characters felt slightly undeveloped at that point. However, once the halfway point happens, this really turn wild, and I was far more engaged until the very end. The world building kept me through the first half as well, so there’s a lot to be said for how the author fully actualized this kind of post-apocalyptic world filled with zombie amalgamations that all at once resembled ones from the games in The Last Of Us series and specifically the big blob from the game Inside. Imagery was always on point too, and I really felt engaged during times it was utilized.

Read in one sitting; amazing characters, story, and world. Very heavy on gore. I anticipate having nightmares for the rest of my life since one of my biggest issues with media is gore but the writing style and everything was so good I just kept reading. But seriously. The gore. So much. I’m glad I can’t visualize in my mind and would personally like to never see an adaptation to screen. (Looking at you, mawmouths from the Scholomancy series. In fact, Novik’s descriptions helped me to place the Graces)

The religious trauma was also to the forefront as this was a doomsday cult book. I think that these two trigger warnings should be the biggest out the gate and the author does have a note to the reader at the front I really appreciated.

I also loved the epigraphs before each chapter which really built the world so much fuller for me. Some are very relevant to the genocide happening right now in Palestine. A book I will heartily recommend with alllllll the trigger warnings (almost all of the ones available for selection on this app!)

Love the themes and imagery (as someone who enjoys gore, body horror, and religious symbolism a totally normal amount), but the characters and world just don't feel well fleshed-out enough and the writing is a bit too repetitive and heavy-handed.

One of my favourite books this summer, this book portrays what it means to find chosen family, confronting dogmatic prejudice, escaping past abuse (especially biological family), and going through Hell and back.

The best books leave me speechless when it comes to the review. God damn, that was magnificent. I love when little gay kids are so engulfed with rage they turn into biblically accurate angel monsters and burn the world with their fury. Like as a queertrans that's just so real and true and ugh I love it. The only notable flaw was that the pacing felt fast. But then the story actually was fast. It takes place in a month. But it's such a minor flaw. Like yeah. Gay people do fall in love, do anything really, that fast. So real. So true. So real.

I can't tell you how fucking G A G G E D I was when they said we're gathered here to join these families in holy matrimony! I threw the book! I screamed and paused the audio!!! The utter and absolute shock!!! The audacity!!! I love it here!!!!!

If you loved this book for the same religious reasons I did then you'd love the song Don't Worry, We'll Be Watching You by Gotye. And the music video!
