One heckuva complex, nuanced and fast-moving Charlie Parker novel about Good vs. evil and the forces put down to move the scales to balance. I absolutely had to finish it quickly.

It didn't occur to me until this book (#4 in the series) but the layers of complexity, the multiple stories in play, and the pureness of the evil in these books reminded me of the Stieg Larsson Millenium series. I happened to watch the third movie this week while in the middle of reading White Road. I gave it a 9/10 on my personal scale.

Recommended for anyone who likes thrillers, Stieg Larsson, and ghostly horror thrillers.

Very good story. A lot of character background fo Angel and Louis. I have read several of the later books, and this installment really moves the characters to their more other-reality. Looking forward to more.

I want to give it a four and a half stars, but not allowed. Connolly is a wonderful Irish writer who writes about America as well as any American. The hero detective is Charlie Parker (yes) and the uber villain is Faulkner. Jazz and Southern gothic is about right. This one is largely about race and religion (in the cult-evil vein, or aren't they all?), and the dark, dark history of Charleston. A bit gruesome, but what murder-mystery isn't. Revenge. Slavery. We make our way back to Maine as the story spins down in a bloody vortex. And while the supernatural rears its preposterous head, every ghost is made real.
