I honestly don’t know what to think. I just feel like the next one will be better. I hope.

I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next in the series, I hope we get more info into Kate's background and what she's running from and hiding

9/18- new read through! I enjoy how tough and smart ass Kate is.

Strong characters, interesting lore, and a good story with a great female lead.

It's very much a product if its time: a super-special female protagonist who can kick almost anyone's ass if she puts enough skill and effort cruising through an urban fantasy setting with dystopian vibes to it trying to solve a complicated case with personal stakes, and commenting on everyone's looks as she goes. Add several romantic options. But then again, it's one of the better versions of it that I've encountered.
Also, everyone seems to be affected by the same telepath telling them to drop witty one-liners in serious situations, which I could probably take from one designated smartass, but everyone? Every time? No matter to whom? Not working for my sense of humor.

But then I really, really enjoyed the worldbuilding with magic coming and going in waves and the whole world adapting by both developing (there are cars running on steam and magic) and going back (or you can just ride a horse). I am curious to know how much can be done with one's blood if intercepted, and how long that can be used, and in what quantities: why bandages where blood is mixed with meds need to be burned but taking a shower is completely fine, and no one seems to care much about battlefields. All in all I've enjoyed immensely how much blood and guts were shown on pages. Even when I was reading while eating.

At first I didn't know if I was going to like this. I didn't quite understand how the world was and the depiction of vampires was different from what I'm used to. However 30 pages or so in: I was hooked. Kate is badass. Curran is purrfection. All the various types of magical creatures, the detailing, etc: amazing. I can't even write a proper review because I'm still in Fangirl mode.

Really enjoyed this one. Reminds me a bit of a female Harry Dresden. Love the dry humor of the main character. She just doesn't give up, or bows down to the bad guys, no matter what.
What I especially liked was the banner between the characters, and that there was a lot of diversity in the "good" guys.

Four stars, because I would have liked a bit more plot and background info. I do think that might come with future installments though. I plan on reading the second one some time later!
