While many are critical of the romance in this story, it's what actually worked for me. Andreas and Claire had a past where he left and she mated with Wilhelm Roth, now the object of his wrath and vengeance. It was troubling initially to have Claire, essentially a married woman under vampire law, take up with Andreas so it gave me pause. Eventually, as details about her relationship with Roth were revealed, it lessened as an issue. I liked their interplay and ultimately her trust and commitment to Andreas.

What didn't work so well with me was the actual storyline around the business of the Warriors, which was fairly predictable. While it was distressing to watch Andreas implode, his behavior was in character based on what happened in the earlier book. The fire show was a bit over the top and I really missed the conflict of the Breeds and Dragos. I'm sure it's coming up but this one just has the prelude. Still an interesting story, just not on the same level as others in the series.

Series: Midnight Breed #6
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

Andreas Reichen is on the hunt for vengeance against his family. He has hunted down all the men responsible for their deaths and now there's only one enemy left alive. Unfortunately, the man is mated to the one woman Andrea ever loved and now he has to use her to find him.

Andreas is no longer the charming and easy going man from the previous books. He is now filled with anger and vengeance, which just feeds the power of his fire ability. He is determined to use his old love Claire against her husband but she has other plans. She actively challenges him and tries to make him rethink his decision of vengeance. Claire was such a compassionate woman and I really liked her determination to save Andreas. Also her ability to walk through dreams was interesting.

I really enjoyed these two and their emotional story. It blended well with the overall story, which progressed a lot in this book. We are one step closer to a confrontation with Dragos. Also is also a major update with the ancient one at the end of this book and I can’t wait to see how that progresses. Overall, this was a great couple with some great story progression.

Trigger Warnings:
- References to the kidnapping, abuse, and forced impregnation of women.
- References and a brief flashback of Andres’s entire family being murdered, children included in the scene.

Es war einfach too much!

Not my favorite of the Midnight Breed novels but not the worst either (that still belongs to the first one in my opinion.) I enjoyed learning more about Reichen and the furthering of the overall arc of the series plot but the heart of the story was not there for me. Claire didn't feel as fleshed out as some of the other females in the series.

Ashes of Midnight has a decent storyline but is washed out by the other novels in this series. What I don't understand is how there is a whole book involving Reichen. While all the other novels focus on a member of the Order, Reichen is never officially or fully initiated, always at this weird middle ground. With no idea where he's at, uninvolved with the Order's' direct affairs, this book strays from the series.
Also, I hate that Reichen's love for Helen is mitigated to make way for his love for Claire. While I understand that what he felt for Helen may stand up to what he feels for Claire, it's unfair for him to completely delegitimize and ignore his past feelings for Helen. He forgets her so completely and is barely affected by her loss, it seems like Adrian is desperate to shove the human out of the way to create room for Claire. Just because he loves Claire fully, that doesn't mean that he couldn't have loved Helen. Personally, I feel like acknowledging his love for Helen and the impossibility of it while trying to reconcile with Claire would have made for a much better story than killing Helen off and shoving her to the side to make room for Claire before she even surfaces.

ok. not the best. I didn't like the female character. Sometimes I just wanted to shout: Shut up!
The plot is good, though

Andreas Reichen is HOT... in more ways than one!

When Andreas loses everything that was dear to him, the need for vengeance consumes him; literally unleashing his talent and engulfing him in flames. But as he makes good on his mission to destroy everyone responsible for his loss, he quickly finds himself going down in the same flames of destruction.

I'd been a fan of Andreas since meeting him in book 3, Midnight Awakening. He had this wonderful Rico Suave exuberance about him. And how could he not? He was the leader of his own Darkhaven, and he was dating the owner of a brothel. Life was pretty perfect for him.

But an old rival ruthlessly takes it all away. Now it seems that only Claire, Andre's former breedmate lover, is capable of saving him by bring love back into his charred heart.

The best thing about this book was how involved The Order was in the storyline. I've really grown attached to all the characters, so I like having them come in for cameos and mini missions. It's so fun to see everyone working together. Plus, something big happens on the 'bad' guys side of things, leading to a lot of heart pounding action.

Still, this book brought up more questions than answers. If someone could direct me to a support group to help me get a handle on these gnawing questions, that would be great. Oh, and I've got to mention that I thought Andrea had the best Breed male talent yet! Come on, you got to admit that pyrokinesis is freaking ninja!

Maybe 2.75 Stars?
So, I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this one. On the one hand, I was excited to get Andreas' book, especially after what happened in the last book. But I have to say I was the slightest bit let down.

Like, overall, Andreas was fine and I could understand his need for vengeance after what happened. I did roll my eyes at his back and forth on Claire. I get that he'd loved her before and had walked away because he thought he needed to protect her, but he came back this time and went from "I'm using her to get to my enemy" to "I'll die to protect her" so fast I'm surprised he didn't get whiplash. I did like that while he didn't abandon things completely regarding Roth, he realized a)prolonged torture was also going to impact Claire and b)that maybe trying to live was worth it.

I wavered on Claire. She'd clearly cared for Andreas all this time, but I was still kind of confused. I get that when he'd left, there'd been a reason for the suddenness, but the timing was weird in how quickly she seemed to go to Roth. And when Andreas showed up at the house, I just felt like Claire was being an idiot and not wanting to see what Andreas was saying. And her stunt at the airport made me want to throttle her. I could kind of see her wanting to protect Andreas but the fact that she left without telling anyone, especially with what she was starting to understand was just plain idiotic. At least she finally decided to use the bond for something constructive instead of using it as a reason to run away.

Roth's reasons for hating Andreas made absolutely no sense to me. He killed Andreas' family all because he
Spoileroffered a coat and shelter to his first mate? SERIOUSLY?!. So because Andreas is a decent vampire, that means that Roth has to order Andreas' kidnapping, take the woman Andreas loves, turn one he truly cares for into a Minion and use her to slaughter an entire community? WHAT THE FUCK?!
Needless to say, that just brought my interest in the story right down. It would have been one thing if Andreas had like interfered in kidnapping some Breedmates or something like that. Then I could have maybe seen Roth's anger (not that his actions are okay for any reason but that's the point of the bad guy, right?)

Chase has me a little worried. He seemed like he was half out of it when he first showed up and then he was taken out with a note that it would likely be a couple weeks but he didn't reappear even there at the end. Was that intentional or just because there wasn't a good way to bring him back?
