Best book of the year so far. (Today's May 25th). Seems destined to be a classic mobster book and hopefully, Netflix series. Imagine this casting, and it's just volume one of three. Anyway, Winslow has written several of the best crime books of the century (I think Savages is still my favorite but Power of the Dog, The Cartel, Winter of Frankie Machine, heck any of them are all damn good. I'm sorry to hear he's quitting writing for politics, but I do like his motivation and goals there. Hopefully he's as good at politics as he is at writing. I can not recommend this one enough.

I absolutely DEVOURED this book. I’m a huge Don Winslow fan - I think he’s probably the best crime fiction writer of this generation, and after meeting him in person earlier this year can confirm that he’s also a super nice, approachable human being. This book was Sopranos meets New England, highlighting the conflict between Irish and Italians (which is something we do in my house on the daily, what with my Italian-heritage husband and my own Irish-American background). The characters were so complex, and the story was set in a way that you didn’t have to reread entire chapters to keep up with the world-building. If your vibe is wise guys, calculated chess moves, big families, Bruce Springsteen, cold beers, the 80s, hostile takeovers… this book is PERFECT for you!

Don Winslow is a very good author, and told this story well. Turns out, even with a great author, I'm not a fan of mob fiction.

Part 1 of the trilogy, where Danny Ryan moves up from a being a loyal Irish mob solider in Providence, RI to that of the de facto leader.

My husband--who reads lots of legal thrillers and police procedurals--kept telling me I should read a Don Winslow book. Simply because he's the best at what he does. I kept that in mind in awarding five stars. I wouldn't necessarily want to read all three (this is a trilogy) in order. But the craftsmanship of this book--a mob tale--is really outstanding.

The characters are finely drawn, and the setting and language and events are really evocative--there is a distinct sense of place and time. And there's a boatload of violence and twisty plotting, mostly who really wants to kill whom, and who's just bluffing. Hint: they're seldom bluffing. There's a big twist at the end, but by then, the reader just wants to know who gets away.

This is a four and a half star book, rounded up, as Best in Genre.

I’m a slow reader, so for me to blow through something really tells you something. (Perhaps being in bed for most of the weekend played into it as well…) This was just entertaining all around - not as epic as for me as The Power of the Dog series, but still fun.

A very well written page turner. Winslow delivers a powerful look at the turf wars between the Irish and the Italians in 1980s Providence. These are bad people doing very bad things who believe their moral compasses are a little better than their enemies because they could do even worse things but choose not to... until they decide to abandon their artificial limitations and cross their own moral boundary.

How can you not love a mob book based on the Helen of Troy myth in The Iliad? The Homer quote and Danny Ryan’s first line tell us exactly where this story is going and it is quite a ride getting there. Solid 4.5 stars rounded up since I know most of the strings hanging will be addressed in the second of this new trilogy. I do look forward to getting to know the characters that are left after the war even better moving forward.
