This was a fun mafia story reminiscent of the Godfather or Goodfellas or any classic mafia movie, but also with some interesting parallels to The Iliad as the inside flap hinted at. There wasn’t a whole lot of new stuff with a genre like this, but the questions of morality and seeing the behind of the scenes of what would or wouldn’t provoke a war and generational divides over how to keep the peace was interesting.

This is a title that intrigued me. It is not my preferred genre but I was really looking forward to reading this.
It was a slow burner for me and took me a few chapters to get into it. However, once I did it was an immersive read and more than the story of mob families fighting. It is character driven and the characters all balance each other brilliantly in terms of story arc. It pulls on the family vs self argument throughout in brilliant ways. It makes you think how small actions can have huge consequences not just for yourself but for those that surround you and that you share your world with.
This is the first Don Winslow I had read but I'm sure it won't be my last. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

I don't remember reading another gang related novel that made me feel so bored.
The story was messy and all over the place. So many characters were introduced who had no development at all. The dialogue was poorly written and it often sounded like a total cliché.
This was my first Don Winslow book and it might as well be the last.

Awesome read. Thrilling story with great characters and a plot that does not stop moving from the moment you start. I loved the Helen of Troy aspect to it, I thought this was a really cool retelling of the classic story.
I also loved the duality of the main character, often being put in situations to do a bad thing for the right reasons. The story was masterful and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Highly recommend this!

This audio book is very enjoyable in terms of the storyline and narration. The narrator has done a great job and since the book is full of actions, I can see it easily adapted into a movie or TV show. Even the bad people have emotions!
This book was fantastic, one of the better books of 2022.
