City on Fire

Don Winslow

4.01 AVERAGE

As always, Don writes to elicit emotions from the reader. Another brilliant start to a new series and I can't wait for the rest.

As New York gangsters struggle to find their way to the top of the pile, they have to undergo many a torturous test. Many family members and friends are lost in this war but Danny Ryan is coming out on top so far. He is the good leader and he is going clean.

The story ends with him throwing 2m worth of dope into the ocean and so now I really want to find out how he is going to pick up the pieces and start again

Started slow. Picked up and got good

A wee bit formulaic (up to and including the phrase "how did things ever get this far?") but the variations are interesting enough and the characters compelling enough that the story rolls like new. It's not in the same class as the Power of the Dog series, true. Still, a completely competent page turner for fans of mob fiction.

3.5. Not my typical genre (1980s gang fiction) but kept me interested. The pace was good. Turned out about how you'd expect. Probably won't read the sequel though.

Recommended by a coworker this book is like a modern-day godfather. It takes place in the 80s where Danny Ryan, a nobody who’s best friend is the son of the Irish mob. A war breaks out between the Irish and the Italians and no one is willing to listen. Unexpected events bring Danny to the table and it turns out, he might know what he’s doing.

Reasons I Recommend:

1) Family history and Puzo-esque vibes

2) Three families intertwined and trying to save the old way while bringing in the new and

3) FBI, drugs and violence, and not knowing who to trust.
