4.5. So good! Family saga combined with a mystery over a 79 year time span. Just loved it. I thought I could predict the ending - who did what and who is who but I was mainly wrong. My method of suspecting everyone at some point did not even really help here.

Thanks Mom - great recommendation!

Had to DNF this one. I may go back to it because it was a good story, but at 50% the detail is dragging me down. For me, the detail is slowing down the momentum of the story. It feels like just when we get something juicy and my heart starts pounding…I then have to read pages about the blades of grass. Don’t get me wrong, the writing is beautiful, but the slow build is killin’ me.

I thought this one was the perfect blend of historical fiction and mystery/suspense. I am a sucker for a character driven multigenerational story and this one kept me intrigued. It is over 500 pages long, so be prepared to settle into this book because it is a journey.

Great read, but a little long and predictable.

This book is a unicorn. It’s one of those rare books that I considered giving up - the entire first 20% - that actually turned out to be quite decent.

Jess returns to Australia when her grandmother Nora takes a fall and is hospitalized. Nora raised Jess after her mother Polly moved to Brisbane. Jess wonders what had the old woman so upset that she had to go up to the attic for something and then fell. After som investigation she finds out that Nora’s estranged brother’s family had been wiped under mysterious circumstances around the time Polly was born. The youngest child, a baby, was only found dead years later.

I figured out one of the family secrets pretty much from the beginning. What happened to Nora’s sister in law and her children was pretty opaque and my guess at a mere accident would not hold water. It’s a bit overly long and takes ages to gain momentum, but overall, pretty ok.

Years ago, I tore through Kate Morton's entire catalog of novels. Hers are formulaic (not a criticism) and follow a familiar pattern: narration between present-day and the past, familial mystery. Homecoming was no different. A young woman is trying to resolve an uncertainty plaguing her deceased grandmother and grappling with her own sense of abandonment and heritage.
Morton writes with ease. As a reader, I can relax into the narration without working too hard to keep track of characters, time and place. The story is engaging and hooks the reader quickly.
There are two mysteries in this story. One is rather predictable and resolves exactly as one would expect. The other, however, was a greater surprise and I was satisfied with its conclusion.
There are parts of the story that seem to wander off, and though it provides insight into character history, I found myself zoned out.
Also, I "read" this on Audible, which was narrated by the talented Claire Foy. As a minor criticism, in the short sections in which she adopts an American accent, it is grating. It sounded forced and certain words were clearly challenging for her.
Even so, I'd recommend the book as an enjoyable, easy read.

Homecoming by Kate Morton is a multi-generational saga that revolves around the lives of the Turner family. Set in Australia, the story spans over decades and intertwines themes of love, loss, and family secrets. The narrative alternates between the 1959 and 2018, unraveling a long-hidden mystery that has shaped the lives of the Turner descendants.
Each member of the Turner family is well written and very likable. I enjoyed the way her characters were complex but also very human.
The novel explores themes of family, identity, and the impact of secrets.
Homecoming is a beautiful novel that will appeal to fans of historical fiction and family sagas. Kate Morton is a wonderful writer. I’m looking forward to reading more books of hers. The only reason this book didn’t get a higher score was because for me, the middle of the book got very long. I also wasn’t a fan of the book within a book thing going on. That being said, this book is a delightful, rich and beautiful read.

I received this book in a giveaway from Goodreads

Did it need to be this long? Probably not. Could more words have been devoted to the end? Yes. 3.5 for sure but wouldn’t be on the top of my lists for recommendations
