Homecoming

Kate Morton

3.94 AVERAGE

Did it need to be this long? Probably not. Could more words have been devoted to the end? Yes. 3.5 for sure but wouldn’t be on the top of my lists for recommendations

I figured out one of the big twists very early on into the novel, and it felt like everything else dragged until the last bit when everything started coming together. It was hard to take the story presented to me seriously knowing that I was being gaslit about many of the facts, and was finding myself just trying to get through it. The ending did present me with some surprises, but there was way too much story in order to get there

Feel pretty middling about this one. The sense of place is incredible, and definitely the standout feature of the book. I also generally liked Jess and thought she felt fairly well rounded, although Nora’s characterisation seemed flimsy to me from the start. I loved the story to begin with, but found myself rushing to finish by the end. The pacing felt uneven - first 200 or so pages did a great job setting the scene and establishing our cast of characters. The middle 200 felt like a drag, followed by a very snappy final 200 pages where we get a LOT of resolution and information. Some of the things I found most intriguing re: the relationships between Nora, Polly, and Jess were threads that were never addressed again.

The good = amazing descriptions of Australia, some interesting familial dynamics, an intriguing general premise.

The bad = patchy pacing. It felt slow overall.

The ugly = for me, some of the plot conveniences and reveals were too much for me to suspend my disbelief.

Historical fiction is not my typical genre, but with the start of a new year and new book challenges, I decided to give Homecoming a chance. Told through multiple time periods and a book within a book, Kate Morton takes the reader on a journey through love, loss, heartbreak, and resilience.

This is weird for me to say, as I often like a lot of characters and their stories/background; however, in this instance there was too much information given in the first part of the book making it drag a little for me. The last 100-200 pages were superb though, so I am happy that I gave it a chance. I will definitely read other books from Morton. 3.75⭐️

I FLEW through this one!

I found the mystery interesting, and the characters were fascinating to follow. The audiobook was really helpful as far as reading it quickly.

I predicted some of the twists, but others caught me unaware.

I don't really want to say more than that. But just let me tell you that a) this is a fascinating mystery, b) Kate Morton is just as good of a storyteller as ever, and c) this story is one that will stick with me for a while.
