This debut novel is a rich African inspired epic fantasy with some sci-fi twists. It follows five POV characters as their paths twist and tangle in unimaginable ways. Both the world and the characters were so well developed that you couldn’t help but be sucked into the story.
I really loved that this was a queer normative world and that there was a wider variety of representation than gay and lesbian. I also loved the diversity of the POV characters, they represent various genders, ages, regions, social classes, and motivations. The class conflict between the rulers, warriors, and commoners also adds an additional layer of complexity to the story
This book is perfect for those that like emotionally charged stories, epic cinematic battles, and mysterious not cats. I know I can’t wait for the sequel because there is clearly still so much more of this story to discover.

Really cool worldbuilding concepts, nicely tied together, definitely accurately rated w for wtf is going on. Unfortunately narrative choices (cutting chapter in a cliffhanger and moving into slower section of another POV) got me out of the narrative a lot, which made it hard to remember things and all the cool worldbuilding.
HOWEVER, this might improve upon reread, not the confusion is somewhat settled. And I will be rereading this when the sequel come out, which one I will read, as this showed a lot of potential (esp for a debut!)

I just wanna eat this book up.
This is true epic fantasy. A large diverse cast, all varying shades of grey. It builds slowly, but thats because the number of threads being set up is large. Some of them start coming together at the end but still alot more things need answering. It was a joy to be in such an immersive world though.
Now to try and patiently wait for the second book.

This is the first epic fantasy I've read in a while. Ayinde creates a rich, deep world in this debut. There are so many characters and plot threads. It was a bit difficult to keep them straight at the beginning, but became easier along the way. The last 3/4s of the book do a great job at tieing the plot threads together while also setting up direction for the next installment! Overall, a very enjoyable story!

The first half set up the characters, their world and their politics. This is a chunky slow read, not in a bad way just hard going, it's very information dense, with a large cast of characters. A true epic.
The second half was a lot more enjoyable as the threads started to come together and there were more answers and less mysteries. Looking forward to the next instalment.
