3.5 stars

I'm enjoying reading about Uhtred's (fictional) life even though I don't always necessarily like him as a person. That said, Uhtred does seem to be showing the beginnings of some much needed maturity. There are still times however when I have to shake my head at the ease with which schoolyard taunts can reduce grown men into behaving like impulsive toddlers. The characters still dont feel as fully realized as they could be but the pacing is solid and the action sequences are suspenseful. I am deducting half a star though for a certain event at Dunholm that felt like more of an easy cheat than anything else.

Still 3.5 stars on this reread and I still stand by my original thoughts as found in my original review back in 2015.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this series so far. I still need to finish the last couple of episodes of the series but I'm enjoying seeing how the story is playing out slightly differently on the page and onscreen. One difference is Uhtred's relationship with Hild and I much prefer this relationship onscreen. We also meet Finan in Lords of the North. I adore Finan! He is my favourite character. He brings so much the books/show and he is such a good friend/companion to Uhtred. He's just wonderful. I'm excited to carry on with the series!

This continues to be a great series.

Despite his hatred for the sickly King Alfred, fate seems to be drawing Uhtred to the Saxon side of the war for England.

Continuing in the vein of the previous books there is plenty of conflict and death. I'm not sure if this book makes Uhtred more or less likeable but it sure makes me want to know more about what happens to him.
