I was really skeptical of this book because of the first few pages. It came off as gimmicky and a little boring. Domino Swift is a racer that's a little different from most. Her background is a mystery, even to herself. But she develops into such a great character that I found myself rooting for her.

She splits her time between racing professionally during the day and participating in street races at night to earn drugs. There is a purpose for the narcotics in the story, which isn't even fully revealed in this arc, that helped make it more interesting. I definitely want to find out more about the origins of this drug and how Domino fits into it.

The characters around Domino are pretty great too. They might be part of why I enjoyed the book so much. There is her father, who happens to be her mechanic and coach. Their relationship might be the best in the book. Add onto that Domino's former crew chief, and possibly lover.

The art is pretty good. Elements of it didn't click with me, particularly early on. It grew on me as I got into the book more though.

This was incredible. Great art, beautiful characters and the story is really exciting.

I don't care about cars/bikes or sports but for whatever reason this book is so good!! I love the mystery of the MC's origins, I love the caring dad, I love the lesbian romance. It's all so cool!!!

Volume 1 ★★★★☆
Volume 2 ★★★★☆

I went into Motor Crush not really knowing what to expect, other than a badass queer female protagonist. I ended up totally being drawn into the world and the plot. This comic isn't set in our world, though I'm not sure if it's supposed to be the future or an alternate dimension.

Domino "Dom" Swift is an up-and-coming motocross racer on the professional circuit, but by night she competes in illegal street races to win the illicit substance called "Crush." While most racers use Crush to fuel their engines (à la NOS, except apparently it's somehow addictive for engines), Dom needs it for something a little different... it's keeping her alive. Along for the ride is Dom's adoptive dad, Sully, an ex-racer himself, and her ex-girlfriend, mechanic and tech expert Lola. Lola's indebted to The Producers, a vicious gang who run the Coliseum casino and are the manufacturers of Crush. When Dom gets desperate, she ends up betting everything she has to the Producers, all on the slim hope that she'll win the prestigious Nova 500 race.

I love The Fast & the Furious franchise, so I was all over the pro-racer by day/street-racer by night angle, but I wasn't expecting the sci-fi mystery of Dom's origins as well. So far, this unique plot has totally kept me guessing and I'm loving the ride. Can't wait to get my hands on the next volume.

All I gotta say is... Dom/Lola is everything. This was the coolest graphic novel I've ever read. Beautiful art, interesting + unique story, awesome characters. Please make a tv show starring Samira Wiley as Domino. That's all. 5 stars!

Hmm … I’ve been wanting to read this for a long while (hello diverse wlw graphic novel plus the most amazing art style ever?), but after finishing this first volume I feel like my head is still spinning. And not in a great way.

Representation:
- the main character is a black butch wlw
- her girlfriend is also sapphic
- there also a lot of other diverse character designs in here, like the protag’s father who’s black with a prosthetic leg

Domino Swift competes in famous motorcycle races worldwide. But that’s only by day. By night she races for the illegal drug called Crush that makes her bike faster than the rest of her competition. The drug can only be used on machines, though, unless someone has a death wish. At least that was common knowledge before Dom realizes her inhaler’s medication is filled with it. Naturally, she has some questions.

So as I mentioned before, the art style here is pretty great. I think it’s the graphic novel’s greatest strength -- it’s distinctive, expressive, and aesthetically pleasing. Sometimes, though, I feel the two main characters are a bit sexualized, with a lot of butt shots, shots of cleavages, of short shorts, etc., but that could really be my own prude-ishness talking.

Unfortunately, the plot lacks the same strength. It starts out fairly strong, with an almost Mad Max-like near (?) future world that revolves around racing and racers as idols. Domino is a second-generation racer whose career is jeopardized by her illegal Crush racing -- and she has a pretty rocky relationship with her ex as well. From there things get chaotic, and the plot splinters off into many, kind of strange directions. There’s an alien, time travel, and villains that are frankly laughable with cliched lines and motivations. By the end of the volume I’m left with so many questions that reading on to have them answered is almost not worth it.

We’ll see, though. Maybe if the library carries it at some point. The art style is pretty great, after all.

The art in this is absolutely gorgeous but the story is boring as hell.
