The worst book I’ve read in my adult life. It is shocking to me how this book is raved about, and how horrible it ended up being. My favorite part was the ending, but not because the book was over. The ending was also the saddest part of the entire book. I would’ve opted to not finish it, but I felt like I had to. I’m sorry I wasted the time. The audiobook narrator was insufferable too

The book is well written and relatively easy to read, but is pretty mundane at times. I found the ending of the book unnecessary. It didn't contribute anything to the story.

I started reading this book because of all the reviews I saw on YouTube. You know that kind of video "if you liked this, you are gonna love that"? Well, I was fooled. I did not enjoy this book.
The book has a really slow pace and has no plot. Like almost everything "important" that happens is written on the back cover. If you're into that sort of stuff, then this book is going to be great for you. But that wasn't what I wanted nor liked.
On the bright side, I should say I like the way it is written. Most books with awful protagonists try to justify them and make you love them, but not this one. Although it is written in first person, it never actually says that what she chose to do is correct. The narrator just explains her life, her year of rest and relaxation.
Last but not least, I'd seen coming that someone would die on 9/11 from the beginning of the book, which is not really a plot twist, or not the plot twist the author thought it was doing. I did not feel sorry for neither of the characters, since I hated them both.

I was surprised at how much I genuinely loved this book. I already want to re-read it. I can see the criticisms that we’re made about this book, but personally, the book was very relatable for me. The book gave a real look at types of depression and how different people cope with their grief. I also love books that describe every day, mundane things in an interesting manner, and the prose of this book does it very well. The psychiatrist was hilarious, I don’t think I’ve run across such a perfectly scattered and absurd character before. The ending was also interesting and unexpectedly tied historical events into the final chapter. I wouldn’t recommend this to everyone because it can definitely be triggering and the characters may be annoying to many people, but I love this book and will be re-reading it.
